Alright, i searched and couldnt find info on this.
I was driving around the other day and i went to shift from 3rd to 4th and it moved w/o resistance and the gear didnt change. I figured the cable linkage broke. itll move up and down but wont go into any gear, stuck in 3rd. So is it only 1 of the cables that are broken? Also, how hard is it to change the cables? (On a TSi 1g) Also, where can i get the cables and what do they cost?

thx

it isn't that hard to change the cables . and u can find them at either the factory, part store maybe, auto salvage yard r someone that is parting out a car but since u have a 90 u need to make sure that u get them off of a 90. also make sure that the cable broke take up the console and see if it is still atached to the shifter and also check on the tranny to see if attached there and if so see if u can move the shifters on the tranny. well hope that helped good luck

there are only 2 cables, 1 is for the shifter, the other for the clutch, u can disconnect them from the tranny without removing it but good luck running the new cable through the firewall, thats going to be a real p.i.t.a.

What the hell? You have a hydraulic clutch, not cable.

You probably _can't_ break a cable, you've more likely broken a shift fork, Godzilla.

ur right, it isnt really a cable, the hydralic line is connected to the tranny with a bushing, either the bushing us broken or ur line has a hole in it, or u broke a shift fork, u can snap the bushing right off the hydralic line if its old, mine is kinda worn out looking and is about to fall apart, its only a little piece or metal and rubber puched by the hydralic line

The ONLY hydraulic line going to your tranny is for your slave cylinder. There are 2 cables that control what gear you are in. The "shift" cable controls the up/down movement of the shifter and also the forward/backward movement of the shifter arm in the tranny. The "selector" cable controls the left/right movement of the shifter and also moves the selector arm in the tranny up and down to select what gear (via shift rail) you go into.

Having no resistance in either 3rd or 4th means you either broke a shift fork (very common) or broke a shift rail end (also common). i've done both in the same transmission. Usually happens when you shift like a gorilla while racing :D

This is what my tranny did, if it is suck on 3rd then ists probably your 3/4 shifter fork, which intails taking the trans off, apart and changing the fork, and when you do go to concelli and get the steel forks.

I broke a shifter cable racing during a mean 3-4 shift. It got suck in 2nd after I slowed down. A half hour drive home at 35mph wasn't all that fun.
hahahahahah I did that last night!!! W()()T! had to drive home at 2 in the morning in 2nd. thank god it wasnt in a higher gear, taking off would have been hell. also, according to the Manual. its not really a P.I.T.A to change. Basicly. Remove center console. unbolt the shift holder down thing ( dont know what its called ) It bolts to the floor. and then unbolt the plate thats on the firewall. then pry out gromet on firewall inside the engine bay, and pull from the engine bay. simple. and...............

install is Reverse of removal!!!!!!!!
