OK here is the deal. First i replaced my tranny and t/c with jdm parts and the next day my rear diff locked up on me. I replaced the rear diff but it is doing the same thing in my car that it was doing in the previous car that it was in. When you make tight turns the inside rear wheel skips and when i back up my car will stop by itself when i push in the clutch. The guy that i got it from thought that his tranny was messed up so he made his car fwd by taking out the t/c, drive shaft, and rear diff. Do i have the same tranny problem as he does or do you think that this rear diff is smoked? How can i check to see if this tranny has a welded center diff while it is still in the car? Dave

It sounds like you are in the same boat i am man. I bought my car with out knowing if it had a welded center diff or not. The best way to check is make a sharp turn like a U turn. If your tires chirp and you car feels like it wants to stop then you have a welded center diff. The other better way to check is to pull your tranny apart and check it. If you snap a rear axel your car will be FWD. Now when you say locked up on you do you mean the wheels wont turn at all they are stuck like the E brake is on and only your front tires move?

Yes the rear tires did not turn. Well they turned about about 1/8 of a turn either fwd or rev before they would lock up. If i were to make a sharp u turn and my rear inside tire were to spin, wouldnt that mean that the spider gears in the rear diff are messed up? How do you know for sure that you have a welded center diff? How does your car drive with a welded center diff?

JDM Tranny... thats your problem - your center dif welded itsself to... well itsself.

AWD tranny info:

USDM ratio 4.929

JDM ratios
GVR4 4.929 <--- NOT ALWAYS CORRECT....
GGSX 5.208
Evo 4 5.435

I found out that the 'big 16G GVR4' tranny didnt even have the above listed ratio. I wish i could remember the ratio that it had, but my tech sheet is back at home.

if you got a 'good deal' on this tranny - its probably because someone sold it to you since its ALMOST useless unless you've got the accompanying JDM rear end.

THE FIX: put your US spec center dif and your ring gear from your old AWD Tranny in- its ratios obviously match your rear end ratio when calculated though the transfer case.

the above listed numbers were pulled from: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Trannies.html

With a welded center diff the car drives normal in a stright line or slight turns but when you make U turns or sharp turns like into drive ways or parking lots then the rear and front tires are going at diffrent speeds. So while the fronts are tring to turn the backs are tring to push the car stright. It will feel like the breaks are on when you give the car gas to make the turn the inside rear tire will skip or break traction for a second. IF it doesn't breakt traction then a drive train peace will break. I have snaped 2 rear axels launching the car on 3 bolt rear ends and i snaped one axel just making a U turn. I know have a 4 bolt. I hope this one will hold up.
