I blew the bearings in my transfer case, or so the guy who is working on my car says. Is it possible/tough to take apart a transfer case and just replace the bearings, or do I have to get a new transfer case? Also, how much do transfer cases usually run (installed with labor and everything)?

Thanks.

I thought only the leak was covered under recall, not the bearings?

Well tell them all the fluid leaked out, causing the bearing to fail from lack of lubrication :thumb:

Maybe just take it in with hardly and fluid in it on the car, and tell them you think the TC is f'd up, play stupid.

He's got a '90 not a 2g.

They probably wont bite.

There are only 22 parts to the whole thing.

There are two shafts and two bevel gears. Each shaft has one gear, two bearings and two spacers. It takes some special tools to get the wear pattern right and measuring gear backlash.

It's not that hard. The hardest part is shiming the gears for proper wear pattern. PM me if you want details.

Transfer case recall is for all 1G's too. I have had the one on my car replaced already. Make sure, though, that if you do have a leak, you replace the yoke that goes into the transfer case. THAT is what actually leaks. Shouldn't be that hard to overhaul though. The factory manual is pretty good at explaining the process.
