I am doing this swap and bought everything for a complete swap other than the clutch and flywheel. I think I will go with the act2600 but am not sure if I want ot go with the lightened flywheel. what do you guys suggest I do. I need to get a flywheel somewhere no clue where or what one. and this tranny is supposed to be in good condition, Is there anything I should do to it before I put it in so it will hold up to around 350whp? Where will I get the best price on these?
thanx

Flywheel.

Fywheel weight gets you stored energy and heat diapation for the clutch.

Yes it's more efficient to spin a lighter one but their are limits as to too light and pointlessly too heavy.

For FWD that has been modified a little less stored enegy in the flywheel at launch can be a good thing plus the engine will have better throttle response. So yeah, I think a lighter flywheel makes sense for your ride.

Since you are'nt running a puck clutch a thin flywheel is'nt as big of a deal. I'd have a reputable and capable shop (RRE comes to mind) lighten your factory flywheel. Just look at the pics of what clutch heat (metallic) can do to a chrome moly flywheel.

VFAQ.COM has a transmission rebuild section.

Get a BMT or gorrilla grip LSD insert. I've had powerfull FWD cars before. If it can get you traction buy it. :D

I'd definately consider beefing up the shift forks.

You can get EVO forks with bronze wear pads from TRE reasonably priced. There are also even tougher billet steel ones but the EVO forks with the bronze pads are plenty good and $85 each.

I would also recomend the double syncro second gear. :thumb:

The double synchro 1st is an option too but downshifting into 1 is'nt that important. It's not as annoying as the 1-2 shift without double synchros. With good synchros and driving the 2nd gear should hold up ok. Just don't slam shift.

Some FWD guys like to try to break traction in 3rd gear and break stuff. Thats when the 3&4 gear set comes in handy. So get that or don't wail on those gears. You can break it if you beat on it in an AWD too but few are trying to break traction, just shift hard.

My trans is ok but I'm looking for a second one to build up.
I'm looking to do straight cut gears with ratio changes and dog ring engagement for 1-2.

By just doing 1&2 I can change the 1st and 2nd ratios, improve shift quality (dogs take practice) and improve the power handling.

AWD's are hard on 1-2 gears. Albins will do a partial set and I'm still waiting on the details. Likely an input shaft and 1-2 straight cut gears.

The 3 and 4 gears are integral parts of the intermediate shaft. I'll be leaving those alone. This saves $ and I don't have to put up with straight cut whine and dog engagement for the gears I use on the highway and in traffic the most. I'm going to be out looking for a pre 93.5 trans to build as 3&4 are a bit stronger. I'd double synchro those but you have to send it in. Plus the 1-2 gears, and 4 spider center diff will eat up enough of my $.

Well I heard from alibins. It's all or nothing you can't install a half set.

Can you order parts from TRE, or do you have to send your transmission to them, and they do it for you?

Also, is there such thing as a transmission rebuild kit?

Rebuild

http://www.twingles.com/ideck/rebuild3/dretranny.htm

TRE lists what can be done by you and what they have to do.

dual synchro 1&2 you can do.

That rhymes. :thumb:

dual synchro 3&4 ship it to their door.

You can do alot your self.

If you can follow instructions and pay attention to minute details do it yourself and save.

I drove a car with GVR4 1st gear, dual synch 1&2, taller 5th, evo forks etc....

Me want :D

I don't think it's the bell housing.

a 90 block bolts right up to a 2g trans in my exp.

I guess ask TRE.

My best guess is it will work.

But maybe there is'nt a place for the 2g trans mounts to bolt on?

What couldnt i do by myself? ie. "Need an expensive piece of equipment.

The dual synch on gears 3&4

The evo forks drop in AWD trannys and AWD trans converted to FWD.

Get with TRE about that maybe completly custom forks are available.

Atleast get the dual synchro 1&2 and the steel shift rails.

A FWD trans is pretty limited.

1. Dual synchro 1
2. Dual synchro 2
3. Shift forks if possible
4. Shift rails
5 New bearings, end nuts, and roll pins.
6. New screen
7. Trash magnet.

That you can do all by yourself.
