You do realize you can use ABEC skate bearings for this?

ABEC 7 (high grade) can be had on ebay for as little as $6 for 16 :)

To actually address the question:

Pull cotter pins at end of linkage.
Pop rubber bushing out.
Pop metal bushing in.
C-clip that beeyotch.
Insert cotter pin.

thanks landoawd... yeah i was screwing around last night and thats what i figured i had to do. but its hard to get that damn rubber out. and by the way, is this gonna make a very noticable difference when i do it? or is it just a waste?

I had a rebuild done at the same time, so I can't say it improved anything. Many have positive things to say, though.

If I can add to Lando's excellent install advise: You should also spread a light film of grease on the outside and inside of the bronze bushings.

I can't get the cotter pins off, can anyone help me on this? I didn't want to break it because it's the only car here right now so I don't wanna drive around with nothing hold the cable on.

A small pair of needle nose pliers might help, and you are probably going to need a pair of split-ring pliers too.

Generally the easiest route.

And yes, they do make a difference.

bah...ok I tried it again, ended up with breaking both sides of the cotter pin on the bottom cable to the point where there is nothing to grab on to. Frustrated, I went ahead and tried the top cable, and the pin slid right out. So right now I have the top cable with the bushing on and the bottom cable with a broken cotter pin. It got dark so I went ahead and cleaned everything up.

Any suggestions on what to do now? I tried getting a small screwdriver and trying to push the rest of the pin out but a small portion of the pin is still sticking out of the hole. I was using a flathead and a mallet to push it just enough so that I can fit something in the hole but there was no room to move the mallet around.

If there is a little bit sticking out, take a pair of cutting pleirs and gently grip the nub and work the pin out. If it breaks again or you accidently cut it, take a new cotter pin and lightly tap (with the mallet) in from the side where the old pin is pushed in.

well it broke in the process of removing it, I don't know why it wasn't coming out. I got the top one off very easily . I left my car at home today, I asked my dad if maybe he can get it out. All I need is that damn pin out and I can get this thing together, after I got the cotter pin off the top cable the rest went smoothly.

You sure those will fit? They look kinda big in the pics. You've done this before?

I think he meant for the shifter plate, not the bushings for the shifter cables.

No, he did not mean for the shifter plate. He meant for the cable ends, where they do indeed fit.
