So, i did the thing vfaq says to do if your shifter moves in 5th gear. But i have a lot of movement in 2nd and 4th. like a 1/2 to 3/4inches of movement. So now what? i really don't need a tranny tearin' apart on me.

How long did your car last like this? How much of a rebuild could this be. This is not what i wanted to hear. Could you explain, or anyone, why this hapens??

It doesn't bother me that it moves, it bothers me that people say i am going to(or may) lose my tranny. Thanks for the input though, i may go ahead and get that kit anyway.

It's been my experience that a little bit of shifter movement is actually normal. Some will probably disagree with me on this, but I know on my car, and most cars I've driven, when you lay on the gas, the shifter tends to move about 1/2" an inch or so, until I let up on the throttle, and it settles back.

I would guess that as a tranny/motor mount issue more than anything, but it doesnt hurt anything so I'm not worried. Hell, I know brand new WRXs do it, saw an in-car race of WRXs vs Evos that was posted on here a while back, and the shifters were doing the exact same thing.

wow, thanks a lot, thats what i needed to hear. I'm still going to go with a shifter kit just to stiffen things up a bit.

I have the symborski kit, it didnt do much for shifter rattle in 2nd, but it made actual shifting more positive. The shifter knob still moves back and forth as I step on the accelerator/let off of it.

If *you* can move the shifter, that's normal. If it has that play in it and moves by itself while you drive, I too would say the bearings are going.

I had mad shifter movement in all gears after I did a BM shifter and Symborksi bushing install. It turned out that I lost some of the stock bushing sleeves. Believe it or not, these lil bitty useless-appearing parts greatly reduce shifter movement. I had like 2" of movement!
