MY friend and I were considering buying a backup trans for our cars, just in case either of us breaks one. The question stems from the fact that he has a 98 GSX and I have a 92 TSI AWD.

Question
Will X AWD transmission be compatible with both cars? If so what model year AWD trans is preferred? What mods if any will we have to perform? (ie: guide pins on a JDM 6 bolt need to be removed to fit a 2G trans.) This question should relate to a 6-bolt swap in a 2G, does the trans bolt up with no problems? Thanks in advance.

Joe

I'm pretty sure 1G and 2G trannie are different, at least the cases are. I think it's the rear mount that's different.

Actually I found out that I have a 23 spline in my 92. My friends is a 98 with a 23 spline. They will actually fit each other... suprisingly enough.

Joe

Yeah, the spline count is the same but the casing itself is different. I know because a friend just bought a junk 92 tranny to use the center diff for his 95 gsx. Both trannies laying on the garage floor and yes, they're definately different, although the internals seemed to be the exact same But it's your money, go waste it if you want.

Are you refering to the motor mounts? Mine is a late model 1992 TSI AWD with 6 bolt block and a 4 bold limited slip rearend. I don't comprehend you... please explain.

TRBOTSI; What EXACTLY was different about the two you had side by side on the garage floor? This will help in answering my question.

I was looking on this web site of a guy that was building up a 92 talon and im pretty sure that when he replaced his broken block he got a 99 trans to put in it. I think i might but since the 92s are 6 bolt and the 93+ is i 7 bolt i really dont know if it would work

Okay, here's the real answer....

Yes, the transmissions will be able to be bolted up...

No, you won't be able to use them in each others' cars.

The trans. will bolt up fine once you change the mount bolted to the transmission (when putting the '98 into the '92)

You'll be able to bolt the '92 transmission into the '98...but then won't be able to use the front and rear motor mounts.

However, neither will work correctly in the other car without swapping the transfer case as well. The overall drive ratio, and ratio in the transfercase was changed in all 97+ models.

So, basic answer to your question..."No".
