I want to make sure I'm counting the splines correctly. What number do you come up with?

(Also if some one can tell me how to post pics directly into threads I'd appreciate it, especially if this pic doesn't show.)

TIA

Well it appears this is a 21-spline t-case. Is there any DSM tranny that (JDM or otherwise) with 21-splines that would fit into a 2g? I know stock is 23-spline. I know 1gs are 22-spline. I am asking for a guy who is confused and wants to know whether the correct tranny went into his 1998 gsx.

Thanks.

It is ether 22 or 23 splines. Only the '90 US cars had 22 splines, '91-'99 had 23.. This might be different for JDM cars. But you need to worry about something else, 97-99 transfer case will only work with 97-99 tranny. And can not be mixed and matched with earlier models (they have different gear ratios one is 1.09:1 the other one is 1.07:1). It is difficult to measure, but if you make 30 or so turns, you will see the difference.

I have a '90 AWD, can i swap out my 22 spline for a 23 spline "91-94" trnasmision and transfercase? Would it be a direct swap? Would the shiftcables, axles and everything else from a 91-94 awd tranny and transfercase swap right into my 90AWD? Thanks for the info.

Yes.

Yes. Including:

You will need ’91-94 shift cables and shifter, you do not need the axles. All 90-94 front axles are the same on AWD cars (FWD cars got different axles in ‘93/’94)

And the entire 22/23 spline thing is a trivial issue anyway, all you have to do is swap in a matching shaft and you are all set.

I would have your tranny rebuild by one of the DSM tranny specialist (like www.shepracing.com)

Well, there are at least a dozen different splines in our trannys. So I have no idea which splined shaft they were talking about. But the odds are that it wasn’t transfer case shaft…
