I recently broke my center differential and I'm looking to weld it. I would like to know if I would be ok having a local welding shop weld it up for if I where to point out the places to weld it. I just want to make sure that it isn't to techincal where and how it is welded. Thanks for any info.

Mike

if the weld goes through any machined surface such as a bearing mount then you would have to have it remachined. if its just a chunk missing in a non critical area whare the weld will not interfear with any of the componants then it will be fine in ths "as welded" condition.

I would recoment a shop that can TIG weld (GTAW) and not Wire feed (GMAW) Wire feed while fast and fairly strong is not as clean....ie spatter.(the little Metal BB's formed & flying around while welding) That kind of stuff sticks in the little areas and can cause problems down the raod. TIG is much better because it tends to be a better weld and no spatter.

I ended up with a locked centre diff (VC actually locked up), and I can concur - it sucks. Breaking the centre diff won't be cured by welding it - welding actually makes it weaker.

You need a stronger diff, or better launch technique.

yea don't do it. Get another center diff. It might be cheeper just to get a JDM tranny. With a welded center diff you will go through rear axels fast. I see you have a 91 so you probly still have you 3 bolt. I have had my 1G almost a year and i have snaped 3 rear axels. I just hope that a 4 bolt will be able to hold up to it. This is just my view if you get a welded center diff don't daily drive the car and that 3 bolt will not last very long at all. I snaped my last rear axel when i was making a U turn. That is how much extra stress it puts on them. Hope that info helps

with the spider gears if i am correct you can not dyno your car. I don't know why but i have heard that with the speed design spider gears you can't dyno it. I don't know if its the same for the TRE ones. Just some info for you.

With a 4 spider you still cannot dyno the car unless you get a vce coupler for dyno only. A welded diff IS the strongest way to go but does put more stress on the rear axles.

MR shepherd is a 4 bolt rear end strong enough to handle a welded center diff for daily driving? if not would you reckamend getting racing rear axels?
