Hi there, sorry if this question has been asked b4, but i just got my 91 Galant vr-4. I noticed that if i do not engage the clutch and gas properly in first gear either... the gear will pop out, or i think you hear a clattering.. But if i engage the gas properly everything is fine, is this normal.???
Also if the rpms are to low and i happen to be in fifth still like exiting the freeway say around 2k rpms and i gas it i can hear a clattter, downshift to fourth and everything is fine

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I hope that its not the case. How positive are you of this? Can you or someone please give me other signs to look for when a tranny is going out.

thanks

sorry but you will need a rebuild. You probably have a bent or worn 1-2 shift fork and the bearings on the end of the shafts are probably also worn, that would cause the clatter you are mentioning.

Could be a 1/2 hub and sleeve, which wqas the case for me, did you change you gear oil recently?

painmaster, thats what i think it is also, everything has been alot better ever since i got more used to the car, however 2nd gear will make a little tiny crunch if the clutch is not ALL the way down. is this normal.

GalantVR-4,

There are lots of things that could cause you to experience problems while shifting. Low brake fluid/air in system, bad master cylinder, bad slave cylinder, broke clutch fork pivot ball, improper clutch adjustment, screwed up shifter linkage, and damaged tranny internals. Check all the easy stuff first. Once you've ruled out all the easy external stuff than your left with something inside the tranny. If thats the case then youll need it rebuilt.

Don't let this scare you but my 3rd gear was clanking into gear and I thought it was only because I didn't have the clutch smashed to the floor well that was not the case!! It turns out I had broke a tooth on 3rd gear and that is why it was clanking. Hopefully this will not be the case for you.
