Okay, here's what happened... wife wants to spend some time away from studying and we're out doing a boost leak test. I'm setting up and she's chilling in the driver seat. I'm checking for TDC and it was a little off so I'm getting ready to turn the crank. I insert the 1/2" ratchet into the crank bolt and try to turn the thing and it kind of resisted. I'm thinking to myself that it just needs a little more "oomph" so I do just that about 3 times before I realized something isn't right. I check everything and noticed that my wife nudged, pushed, kicked and somehow got the shifter partially into first gear!

It is now ticking from the transmission and the sound changes along with RPM, exactly like lifter tick. I noticed that the clutch pedal free play has increased by about 1/2" to 1". I can also feel the vibrations in the clutch pedal. The last couple days when this did happen, just putting the slightest amount of pressure on the clutch pedal would cause the ticking to go away. It was never noticeable during driving until today when I was leaving the apartment. It ticked in first gear and as I got up to speed, it either went away or I just couldn't hear it anymore.

I'll be calling Jon at TRE tomorrow but I'm hoping someone can give me an answer.

You didn't damage anything in the transmission by turning the engine with a breaker bar. The engine puts FAR MORE torque to the transmission than you would ever be able to with the breaker bar.

Thanks you for taking the time to comment. Any idea what is causing the noise? I used a stethoscope to verify that it was the transmission.

Well I've seen some cases where a spring is knocked out of place, and if you're able to feel it in the pedal (especially since the free travel has changed) that would make me think more towards the clutch itself or the pressure plate.

That was one of the first thing I suspected, but today it ticked while I drove it. I really do hope its just a minor issue and fix.

My throw out bearing makes noise while driving all the time.... Except now that i think about it, it's stopped making noise recently... Maybe i should pull my transmission soon LOL.

Anyway, yes a throw out bearing can still make noise while being driven, but if the noise disappears or lessens with clutch engagement i would definitely suggest it being a culprit.

If you pop a disk spring, it makes a similar racket. I highly, highly doubt you damaged anything serious with a breaker bar. If she had it in gear while you cranked on it, a popped spring sounds pretty feasible...
