Just when i got my car running good somthing has to go wrong. On saturday i put in my new 16G turbo and i drove around all night. Well that same night I took a look at my miles and noticed that ny clutch is just about broken in so i thought i would do one launch with it to see what it can do. Well to make a long story short when the car took off i heard a very loud thunk sound. I freaked out and took the car out of gear and just sat there for a second i put it back in gear and gave it some gas thinking that my tanny is probly toast. Well the car moved and i thought man this must be my lucky night. I drove alittle while and came to a stop sign and when i left the sign i gave the car some gas after i was rolling and the front tires broke tracktion. As soon as that happened i felt sick. I tried it one more time and it did the same thing. Now i am thinking it is either my tranfer case or my center diff. The car doesn't make no sounds or anything when i drove it home. I am hoping it is the transfer case becouse it is still under warrenty from when the dealer replaced it about 6 months ago. Is there a way to check it with out pulling the car apart? IF its the center diff is it a part of the tranny? If i bought a jdm tranny would it come with a new center diff? Oh and is it safe at all to drive my car like this for a short time like 2 weeks till i have the money to fix it?

dude....a rwd eclipse sounds beastly. if that was the case for me and it wasnt ####ing up my car wutsoever...id keep it that way just for bragging rites and drifting:D

See I don't know if it is messing up so far the little driving i had to do with it is fine. I have heard that little flakes of metal from the center diff could float around and make there way to the scyncros (SP?) and take out my tranny. That is the case when the car is RWD. I have only read about one car that was FWD and the guy still drives the car and its been sevral months and its fine. I just want my AWD back. I checked the rear axels (the cv looking things) and they are fine. The car doesn't make any noises when i drive it. It seemed to drive better FWD then it did AWD. I am keeping the car parked as much as i can till i can get it fixed now.

I just told this story on another thread but ill repeat it for you. I did a hard launch with a 91 GSX I used to have at the track. I had a stage 3 clutch and alot of bolt ons. When i did a 6k launch i heard a loud noise and i went from smoking 4 tires to just the fronts! I drove the car home 70 miles like this and it never made another sound. I took it to the dealer under warranty and they told me the Viscous Coupling was broken for the AWD. I didnt tell them i was racing cause i wanted it fixed obviously. They told me the only time they saw them break like that is when they are towed with 2 wheels on the ground rolling. Im not sure if this is your problem but like mine the front wheels turned only with no other noises or problems. Hope this info helps you find the prob...

You probably broke the center diff. Drive it as little as possible until it gets fixed. Once a chunk gets out of the CD casing, it'll most likely get caught under the front diff, and it'll end up coming out the bottom of the bellhousing under the front diff. Ask me how I know this.

If you broke a rear axle, it'll drive like the clutch is slipping. If it's FWD or RWD, you broke the CD.

Breaking the center diff will cause rwd only. The diff case drives the t.case output shaft through the viscous and will still have the slipping fealing. The only way to lose rwd is t.case, t.case splines, driveshaft or rear axles or in the very rare case that a viscous melts itself inside causing the clutches not to work.

Trannies & all things drive train related I would say are Johns specialty. I would go with his diagnosis. I'm sure he has busted a few on the way to those low e.t.'s

Thanks for the input John. My car is at the dealer right now. They installed a new T case about 5 months ago. If it is the center diff i have set aside some money to get a JDM tranny and install it. All i can do its the T case like you said. Wow John Shepard answerd my post. Good luck with the season man.

I just heard from the dealer. They told me my T case is fine and that my left rear axel is busted and possible my carrier bearing. Would that cause my car to be FWD? If one axel goes out would that make the car FWD or would both have to go out? Would a bad carrier bearing make the car FWD?

Yes, as John Shepard already said above, breaking a rear axle will make you FWD. I have done it and thats exactly what happened. Launched the car and spun the shiot out of the front tires. Checked the rear axles and the splined end of the drivers side axle had snapped off inside the rear diff. This was with my old 3-bolt. Get a 4-bolt now since your 3 bolt rear is junk anyway

If you break a rear axel your rear end is junk? I thought if you just replaced the axel the car would be ok? I looked on the Vfaq and i didn't see anything about how to change a rear axel. Are they easy to change?

No 3 bolts are junk to begin with;) , but it depends where it broke. You said that you needed a new carrier bearing, which means going into the diff to rebuild it, and have to get the lash set up and everything. Why bother spending the money on a 3 bolt rear? You will pay more money for SATAN to fix that rear then it will cost you to find a complete 4 bolt used.

I don't think the carrier bearing is bad. I didn't get any of that thump thump sound when my car was AWD. I don't want to spend to much money i am getting laid off work this week so i want to just get the axel and if its possible change it my self but i can't find anything in the VFAQ as to how i would change it. I will get a 4 bolt rear later after i get another job or if i snap another rear axel.

IF the axle is all that broke and NOTHING ELSE was affected, then you can just change the axle. Get out your 14mm socket and wrench, take out the 3 bolts on the wheel hub, and tap the end of the axle lightly with a hammer, should just come off. Then take a prybar or long flat screwdriver and pry the axle out of the diff housing, its held in by a small retainer clip that you will have to "pop" out. After you pop it out, the whole axle should just slide out. When you put the new one in, slide it in the diff all the way till it locks in place, and replace the 3 bolts on the hub, and your done!

I'm getting something similar to this..it's intermittent though, at times it's almost as though my right rear tire is flat, and then it'll go away for a while, and ride smooth as glass.

Would the most likely cause be the carrier bearing in the rear?

Are you sure they said carrier bearing? Because the only carrier bearing i know of is in the multi piece drive shaft.

^^ thats what i was thinking, LOL.. didnt even bother to look at the dates until someone said something.

Any update though? hehe

I junked the 3 bolt and got a 4 bolt. I am not trying to figure out my new drive train problems. This car would be awsome if i didn't have drive train problems.

my car is AWD now but now the rear tires will break traction when i make sharp turns. I replaced that tranny and put a 4 bolt rear end in and it still does it.
