Hi all,

I been looking through the old threads and been searching the internet for a complete list of parts needed to convert my January 90AWD single synchro to the 2nd gear double synchro setup, and I see many contradictions. For instance some people say you need a new intermediate shaft and what ever else doesn't fit from the old shaft, while it looks like others say you need a new input and intermediate shaft. I am sure somebody on this site has done this conversion, and could shed some light on this issue. What parts do I need to make this conversion?

Thanks,

Ok! Here is my list so far!

1) Late 90 to 94 Intermediate shaft #22312
2) 93-94 2nd gear double synchros #22546A
3) 93-94 2nd gear needle bearing #22328W
4) 93-94 2nd gear #22325

Are these the only definite parts that I would need? Does anybody have a schematic of an early 90AWD transmission with part numbers?

Thanks,

No but the output shaft splines to the transfer case are shot. Jon is going to send me the parts to rebuild my transfer case extra cost is now at $173.53. I looked at the spline socket on my transfer case and they match shot as well. I will tear down the transfer case tomarrow to se if I need bearings as well.

I had the same idea when my 1990 center diff died. I bought a 94 parts tranny to change my internals. Unfortunately when i pulled it apart, the intermediate shaft gear that mates with 4th had a broken tooth. so i am just swapping center diff internals

Anyways, I will be finishing the center diff replacement this saturday and i can compare things and measure. I'm not taking out more than the diff on the 90, so i won't be able to measure some things.

Some other problems you may encounter:

-location of the intermediate shaft. last saturday i did try putting the 2nd tranny cover (thin one with the bearing cups in it) from the 1994 on the 90. it didn't seem to line up very well at the intermediate shaft. i didn't measure to confirm but i will on sat.

-shift rail and select lever shaft may be different.

Thanks for the input!

The only thing bad in my 90 tranny is my 2nd gear synchro. I fried it a month after the dealer rebuilt it(FREE) by missing shifts into 2nd. Otherwise my tranny is in excellent shape. I dont want to put the stock synchro back in, it was to easy to f**k it up.

What about the cases of the 90' and 93-94 tranny, are they the same inside? so we just can put 93's intermediate shaft with second gear and double synchro there?

May be someone know the difference between Intermediate shafts of 90 and 93-94 trannis?

Actually i searched this question too, and go further - i'd like to put into 90 tranny the parts from Evo 3 tranny - 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears with double synchros... but cant gather the list part needed for this

To answer the original question u will need a intermediate shaft from a 91, a second gear, first gear, 2 needle bearings, and the collar that goes on the end of the shaft that holds the needle bearing. If u do not get a 91 it will not work 92 and newer have a different shaft. But u can use the newer shaft if u change the center diff case too. but that gets expensive u need a 91 intermediate shaft part number MD 740193 hope that helps
oh yea dont forget the hub and sleve

You guys must like doing things the hard way:

Just send me your original 1st or 2nd gear and I can machine it to accept the double cone synchro in your original assembly. Saves time, hassle and a lot of money. If you're really nice to me, I can also send you all of the parts needed to convert your 1-2 hub to the 4 spring unit for cleaner and faster high RPM shifts :)
