1G FWD in a 1G AWD

I did a search and really could find an answer for this... My problem is this... I have a 91 AWD, the tranny sounds like a box of rocks (sounds like bearings going out).. Now I am wondering if a could replace my AWD Tranny with a FWD Tranny??? The other part is can I just un-bolt the driveshaft from the rear diff and leave it alone or will that cause damage... My purpose for this is that I need the car to get to work and thought that I could rebuild my AWD while its out and still drive my car... I know I will probably need the axles for a FWD as well, I am just concerned about the rear end......

it will work even the AWD axles will work no difference. Just remove the driveshaft.

You are definitely going to need a new flywheel. The awd flywheel is a little smaller (as far as the ring gear is concerned) than the front wheel drive flywheel, therefore your starter will not reach it when it comes time to start up. Get a front wheel drive flywheel if you plan to do this.

You would need a FWD flywheel, and FWD starter plate. And remove the t-case and driveshaft.

Do you have a fwd trans laying around or something? Otherwise why not just find yourself an AWD trans? But yes it will work as described above.
