I have broken 2 3rd gear shift forks and 1 shift rail going into third gear while racing. the transmission shifts like brand new. I am just pushing it past the stopping point I think. a domestic buddy of mine said he had to build stops on the shifter in the car to prevent this same issue. has anyone else done this or would it even help.

the 3-4 shift fork is prone to cracking off where the dowl pin gose thru. And it will usually brake going into 3rd not 4th. get a evoIII shift fork there cast iron.

I had this problem too. I have broken 2or3 3-4 shift forks, so when I shortened my shifter I looked at the little rubber stopper, I welded a big glob of weld on both sides of the shifter where the rubber stopper was and filed the globs down so they stopped the shifter just like the stock rubber one did without any deflection. And have not had any problems since.
P.S. on the last shift fork I broke I actually punched the radio while holding the shifter because the deflection.

I also have a evo3 3-4 shift fork. I think it helps too. this and the stopper mod was done to my mirage turbo, not the 98 awd.

The stopper mod won't help IMO. The steel fork will work, but it just doesn't feel as nice. I have a simple modification that I can do to the OEM fork so it will NEVER break again. If you ship me your fork and rail, (good parts) I can modify it for $10 + shipping.
