i just blew my trans in my 1997 gst turbo 5 speed shear 4th gear ..so i had a 1991 1st gen fwd trans layin around i asked a jon at TRE and Jacktrasmission and they both told me i can use the 1st gen fwd internals into my 2g gst case..all i did was use the shift rails (forks)ends off my 2g gst trans on the 1st gen fwd rails ..so everything else is off the 1st gen fwd trans expect the rev gear i had to use the stock rev gear off the 2g gst trans..after i got the car up and running shifted perfect but 5th gear had a really small grind i was like no big deal cause you can chage the 5th gear set up while the trans is on the car..so the next day i swapped out 3 ..5th gear setup's also includeing a 5th gear setup off a 1st gen awd trans ..all did the same thing not sure why if the car is running with my foot off the clutch and i try to put it in anygear it wont go in but if i try to put it in 5th it just grinds seems like there no blocker ...the grind is always the same if i go fast or slow ..anyone here know what can it be i tired everything ..made sure the clutch wasnt draggin used bg in the trans nothing helped ...if anyone knows what it could be please reply thanks

You should have said 2g nt fwd trans are weak.

Anyway, you're talking about a transmission designed to handle 140hp. 250% more power through a part doesn't make it fragile -- the fact that it lasted that far means it was overengineered.

That said, these aren't cars to expect reliability from.

I wouldn't say that. He's talking about a modded vehicle. He blew a transmission that like you said was built for everyday drive of around 140 hp. A daily driver, they don't design the transmission's in cars to be beat on everyday. Your modifying a car to make it have more power. Of course it's not gonna be as reliable as if you hadn't modified it.

For the record I am tired of people saying DSM's are not reliable cars. My fiancee's COMPLETELY STOCK 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX runs absolutely wonderful. Haven't had any problems out of the ordinary. My only problem is that people continue to mess with it. (Her brother accidentally snapped off her passenger door handle in the dead of winter. Just the other day someone decided to break the drivers side door handle off for the hell of it.)

Other than that her car runs great, rides great, looks great! Modified cars break, expect it to happen if you are running alot of horsepower. To the OP, hope for the best but plan for the worst. Watch classifieds, look in the paper. Anytime you have a chance to pick up a spare part that may come in handy, I think it would be a great idea. Just build up a tranny to hold the horsepower you are throwing at this thing.

The final drive in the FWDs is 4th gear, in the AWDs it is 3rd. The FWDs break the gears easier because the final drive 4th gear is under more stress at all times than the 3rd gear final drive in the AWD. Since 4th is higher in the gear ratio, it is under more load. You will be better off modding an AWD tranny to work in your FWD. You can get the cool gears for the AWD and they are a lot stronger due to the location of the final drive gear.

Gear will also break due to incorrect bearing preloads. What did you have your intermediate shaft and pinion shaft preloads set to??
