OK, I know I actually need to replace my axles and I need brakes on the front. I want to do all the above, but limited on cash, The car is making a noise, and I want to troubleshoot this as accurately as possible without replacing stuff first.

It only does it when it's been driven a while. Not really a clicking like you think of a typical CV joint, but more of a tintty sound. It sounds very much as if the drive shaft is bumping into a heat shield.

Mostly only happens when engine under load/accelerating, especially from a stop and at lower speeds/gears. Also sometimes I don't hear it much until a car is next to me. Can't hear it at highway speeds.

But no straight up clicking like most CV joints like the old sentra we had.

Both my front axle boots are toast and I need rotors and pads (rotors are warped, pads getting low).

I just want some feedback before I go buy all the parts. As an example, I went to Big O Tires, they're more then happy to replace the axles fro $212 each, but they won't even drive me car and listen to the sound. I just want to make sure that I replace the right parts, I have limited funds right now.

If I spend the money on thae parts and the noise is still there it will suck.

So this noise it's kind of a tinny sound as if each time the wheels spin, something is rubbing kind of like, or like the sound of the driveline hitting a heat shield. But most of all my exhaust heat shileds are gone and what's left down there are plastic I think.

Here's an update on what it sounds like: As if the turbo is rubbing on the inside...I mean as if the turbo cartridge was rubbing against the inside of the turbine housing....but I think it's related to the suspension or the drivetrain, or brakes...I think the turbo is working ok; but not sure, I mean it's boosting fine; but maybe there is something wrong...it's supposed to be a newer turbo; EVO3.

And I recorded it I will upload it please listen and tell me what it sounds like.

Even if replacing the axle's and brakes doesn't fix the sounds, they obviously need replaced anyway. You can do it all yourself and save a lot of money, it's not that hard.

Here's the axle removal vfaq, you don't need to do the axle rebuild if you just buy new axles.

You should be able to do the brakes at the same time with problem. It's all pretty straightforward.

The sound you're describing could be the driveshaft rubbing on the transfer case dust shield.

It looks like your local Schuck's has them for $165 for both axles with a lifetime warranty, that's a hell of a lot cheaper than $212 per side.

Yeah I know I will be doing the repairs regardless; just want to fix whatever is making the sound first. I'm pretty sure it's one or noth axles. Or could be brakes they both need done LOL. It's not that I don't maintain this car; I put $3000 into it and so I was making the car earn this other stuff (like; if you stay running for a while OK I will fix your other stuff).

Yeah I think I will go the el cheapo axles (the ones you mentioned), and go with basic solid Brembo Rotors and the Axis Metal Master pads. I found a place with free shipping, and the brembo rotors are only $40 each, the pads are $40 for the set.

I inspected the turbo for shaft play; it was fine. See I really am just making sure it's the right stuff I'm changing out.

Scratch that about it only doing it warm; it does it hot or cold. But it comes and goes.

What all sounds can they make?Ummm?
POP,SNAP,GRIND,Click,Tick,POW,BOOM,ERRR
Looks like a batman quote:)
It all more than likely needs changed.
Might as well go ahead and fix everything now.

After the shaft replacements you might be able to take the rotors to a brake shop and have them resurfaced if there is enough material left on them. Then just buy new pads. Might save you a few bucks if you can go that route.

I replaced both front axles and the pads and rotors. $600 later, the noise is still there! It comes on when under load either at low speed or from a stop. It goes away at higher speeds. Like for sure totally gone by 50 MPH, possibly sooner.

Please listen to my sound clips (Recorded with my cell phone, please disregard the sound of the wind when I stick the phone out the window) to see if this sounds at all familiar to any of you, here are the links:

By the way, my sound file links are still working (someone had pm'd me saying that they aren't working).

Looks like it's the U-joints. Squeeking and/or ting ting sound with each revlotion of the drivetrain. It's intermitant, so it's not all the time. Goes away when you put foot on the clutch. It is really inconsitent when it does it, it's difficult to just "make it do it" by braking, turning, etc..

But if you search google "ting sound", "u-joint" it brings up lots and lots of matches (not so much DSMr's but other vehicles like 4wd and RWD trucks.

There is a little dust cup on the t-case where the driveshaft output it it can come off sometimes check it out.
