DSM Guru's - Answer this Clutch Question..

First, check my mods list.

Spun a balance shaft bearing last June 06 - rebuilt the crap out of the motor. When we took out the motor and tranny found the firdanza flywheel had 3 grooves cut into it at the outer edge, and the throw out bearing was TRASHED - completely, the clutch disk was trashed as well. We assumed pieces of the throwout bearing caused the grooves in the flywheel since the disk was not down to rivets. Replaced everything. Firdanza insert and Centerforce Dual Friction clutch.

Fast forward to June 07 - had grinding going into 2nd gear, but not when downshifting into 2nd - bad tranny right? Well here's what we found, slave cylinder completely TRASHED. Here's the good part, the pressure plate was extremely burnt as well as the flywheel BUT, the clutch disk was OK.

We also found that the last guy to work on this used wire to hold the throwout bearing (not the retaining clip), we found the cable bracket loose.

And the cherry on top - he put the BG Synchro Shift II in the transfer case and the Redline LIGHTWEIGHT gear lube in the tranny!!!!!!. Don't want to hear it!!!!! That is, that the tranny is cashed.

Bottom line: how can the pressure plate and flywheel get hot and not ruin the clutch disk?

I'm going back to a stock flywheel.

Did you check the step height and runout on the flywheel after you installed the new friction surface?
