Well i was driveing my car tonight and was on my way to get something to eat. All of the sudden my shifter starts to get really notchy. When i stopped to eat, i tried to put it into 1st and it wouldn't go in. It wouldn't go into any gear. So i turned the car off and tried and it went into all gears fine. So i turned it back on and tried again. It went into every gear but hella notchy. But it grinded going into reverse. I drove home and it was shifting but pretty notchy it grinded into 1st once, 2nd twice, and 3rd 1 time on the way back. My friend said it may be the clutch going out but i don't think it is. Because it grabes hella good still. The guy i bought the car from said that he just put in a act 2600 in it. The only thing is that it engages really close to the floor. But i read that since it is a hydralic, that it self adjust itself and that the more worn the clutch is that it engages futher away from the floor. If that is true then i don't think it would be the clutch because of where it engages. So i'm thinking the tranny is just takeing a #@%#@%#@%#@%. The throwout bearing has been making a noise for about 4 weeks now. Any input would be greatly appreciated. THanks........

Did these symptoms recently surface, if so my first suspect would be the clutch hydralic system (Master cylinder, Slave cylinder, and lines). I'd check these parts first to make sure they are not leaking.

If they are leaking, CTCmotorsports is offering a package deal on brand new slave and master cylinders for $90. (www.CTCmotorsports.com)

You are correct that the clutch is hydralic, but the engagement point is adjustable. There is an clutch master cylinder adjustment rod that connects with the clutch lever under the driver side dash. There is a vfaq on it at www.vfaq.com, There is also a faq there about swaping slave cylinders.

If this doesn't help then the next likely suspect is the tranny.

The T/O bearing noise may be clutch chatter which is common with aftermarket clutches

Hope this helps

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. Yes it did just happen right away. I mean it grinded into 2nd at high rpm with fast shifts before and reverse a couple of times but that is just normal crappy dsm tranny stuff. Since i put in the gm syncromesh it has been a lot better. I will check out the slave and master cylinder for leeks. Hopefully it is just that. I will let you know.

Thank YOu Quest. I was looking for a master/slave kit.... I just recently started having the same problems, and I know my cylinder is leaking (dripping on the rubber foot rest inside the car just left of clutch). I've been topping off my fluid for a week now.

i had the same problem.it ended being that one of the bolts from the tranny to the block snapped.so everytime i would press the cluth the bottom of the tranny would move away from the block.my mechanic removed the adjusting screw for the pedal and put a longer bolt.now my car is fine, but i have a clamp holdin the tranny to the block just incase it happens again.when i get my new clutch my mechanic is gonna remove the broken bolt in the block and replace it with a new one.i even went under tha car to see it myself,my mechanic would press the clutch in and i would see the tranny slide over,i was like wtf .but i think its just your clutch that needs to be adjusted, dont drive the car around alot ,you can mess up the tranny ,so i suggest you get it checked out soon

hey im having that prob now where its hard as hell to put in gear when its cold its fine but once the motor heats up the the gears become harder to put in gear when i first had this prob i took it too mitsubishi they told me it was fine becuase they didnt hear anything so when it happened again i let them hear it and than they told me i would have to spend 750 for them to look at it

Well i drove it to work yesterday morning(didn't want to but had no ride) and it was fine. Just like it always has been. On the way home it was fine also. Today it was just fine also. I drove a lot also because i had no choice and it was still fine. So i don't know what it could of been. Maybe something was stuck? Do you think it is possible for something to be stuck and then be okay?

gsjoey- This actually sounds like the sycros,
I used to own a 93 1.8L and in the mornings when I would go to school it would shift like a champ, but as the car warmed it would grind into second and third, because the 2nd and 3rd gear sychros were shot. For a cheap solution, Id suggest you throw some BG sychroshift in it until you can afford a rebuild:(

DREW- I'm glad to hear your problem went away, but don't be surprised if it happens again.

Well drew quest hit it pretty good. I woudl also chek to make sure that the bolt on the shifter itself is on tight or perfect I shoudl say. If it is to tight it will feel pretty sluchy and notch to loose and it wont go into gear unless you jam it in. Also after the cyliders are check and the fluid is bled, adjust the clutch and everything should be fine. the only other thing I can think of really is that the syncors are going bad. it seems that sometimes they will grind and sometimes they wont...
