Tansfer case leak on back housing seal.

I'm about to just replace the yoke on my output shaft on my transfer case since it's leaking from there slowly. I also noticed that it's leaking from between the seals on the back housing. I've replaced my transfer case before and it's kind of a pain since I'm on jack stands in a small spot by myself. I'm planning on just removing the back housing instead of removing the whole thing. Good idea or bad idea? It's just the grey-stuff to seal it, right? Not a gasket?

Yes it is just a sealer. Use 3M ATD part #8663 or equivalent

I used some RTV crud made for transmissions and gear cases, think it was blue. So far 2 years have gone by and no leaks as of yet.

how do you spot the case leaking if you have it off the car? is the fulid suppose to leak out of the output side with the x-case off the car?

While you're messing around with the sealer, clean the inside spline section of the yoke real good with solvent, and goop some down deep around the plug in the end to seal it. That's where it leaks. Let it thoroughly dry before using it. It shouldn't ever leak again.
