I went to look at a car today that I was lookin to buy. Test drove it, drove well, no shaking it high RPM pulled like a champ. The passengers side axle is messed up, it thuds as it drives (bad CV/axle). Heres the stranger part that im trying to figure out what it is.

When he started it up when I got there, it sounded fine no wierd noises or anything.
Revved it a few times (all in neutral) to look at the exhaust to see if it was puffin smoke or anything, it wasn't. So got in to start the test drive. When I got in, i started hearing a kind of wierd "clackety" sound coming out of the right hand side of the car. I think MAYBE the axle has something to do with it, but im leaning toward a transmission issue, cause when the cluthc was depressed, it went away. So we dropped it into gear, rolled it forward, the sound went away and didn't come back the whole test drive. can anyone clue me in as to what the sound was?
Thanks

so just moving the car a few feet will make the throwout bearing stop making noise? I would think it would continue with the noise especially when putting it back into neutral and letting it sit. Whhen we did...no more noise. how odd.

I've never had a stick of my own, just autos (700r4s mostly) so I don't know much about troubleshooting them ;) Thanks!

I'm pretty sure its the throw out bearing the way you say the noise went away when you pushed the clutch in the first time. Its a good thing the noise doesnt come back, just keep it in the back of your head there's the possibility it could be on its way out. But, from my experience you don't have much anything to worry about. Mike

ok cool thanks for the heads up. I talked him down further in price so im gonna go ahead and buy it. Its a strong runner, sounds nice, and doesn't shake or anything. Clutch feel like its working just fine (aside from the fact that it grabs when barely off the floor, apparently thats normal though)

Thanks again

NOT NORMAL! that is a bad sign that your clutch pedal is grabbing right off the floor. as mike said it sounds like your tob is on its way out. this happened to me and when it finally gave out i was left power shifting the car home which my syncros didnt like very much.

when you get the car. pull the transmission and replace the following parts.

1.clutch
2.OEM throw out bearing
3.clutch fork
4.pivot ball

it could also be grabbing off the floor because you have a bad clutch pedal assembly but it might also just be that the clutch pedal assembly needs to be re-adjusted. push your clutch to the floor and then let off. then grab the clutch pedal and pull up on it (towards the drivers seat) and see if it comes up at all. if it comes up then you have a worn clutch pedal assembly. that my friend is the worst job on the face of the earth!

if your lucky it could just be that your slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder is bad, or you just need to flat out bleed the lines

hope that helps

well its not RIGHT off the floor, its about an inch and a half or so, but its alot lower then any other stick I've driven. Could it perhaps jsut be out of adjustment? I'll take a look at it when I get it. Thanks for the info regardless though on what might need to be fixed. BTW how much fixing that stuff typically cost?

cheers

It can be adjusted, theres an adjustment rod up under the dash where the clutch master attaches to the pedal.

Pulling the trans isn't a difficult task. But, if you must have it done somewhere expect to spend alot of money.

NOPE! :) Im gonna do it at my house, in my garage. Thats part of the reason I bought this thing, I enjoy the work. I found a clutch kit act 2100 at slowboy racing for 364.35.

pressure plate, street disc, throw out bearing and alignment tool are all included. Are the flywheels the same for AWD vs FWD?

Thanks again for all your info your a big help!

The flywheels are different awd to fwd make sure you get the proper one if your gonna get an aftermarket. Otherwise have your stocker machined/stepped before install of the new clutch.

I also recommend the ACT 2600 over the 2100 for an awd car. :thumb:
