I am having a hard time removing 5th gear as there is not enough surface to grab onto it with my puller. Is there a special puller or another tool I can use other than screwdrivers as I don't want to chip the gear. Also do I have to grab the gear itself and slide the whole synchro assembly off all at once or grab the synchro gear first? Thanks.

I pull the whole assembly at once and use two screwdrivers to get it off. After it comes up some you can use a large open-end wrench to pry from the bottom without risk of chipping the teeth.
