Ok I have been here a bit not but 3 posts dont know the first one its been so long.I have one fear in the DSM that is the Crankwalk issue. I have read hte Crank walk definition,I have read multiple multiple I say again Multiple Posts over this and I just cant get the answer I am looking for. What is the Chances of Crankwalk happening.I have had a reply from a shop that Iirc it was RRE or someone and that the Crankwalk issue is over blown that there is a fear but 1 of every 100 or 1000 have it something to that effect cant remember. But the reason is I am in the process of a deceission on what car to get.
1.240SX
2.DSM 2G AWD/Talon TSI AWD
3.300ZX TT/Z32
4.MR2 Turbo

When I get back from Iraq I will have about 8g to get my car so any help that I can get that is useful. I have used the search as you see this is post 4 for me in the year or so I have been here.

Thanks

As with any used car (espcially a relatively inexpensive sports car) there will be risks of failures. Knowing the person selling it or the history of the car (mods, was it rebilt, when?) is optimal.

As for the risk of it happening to you, there was a Tuners Poll which lists member's experiences with 2G CW.

I'd still highly recommend inspecting (or have a shop inspect) the crankshaft pulley endplay (among other engine/drivetrain vitals) prior to purchase. There are also many 2G owners whom have already rebuilt their 7-bolt block or converted to a 6-bolt :dsm:

Plus, if you are worried, you can do a balance shaft elimination which will prevent this from happening. You can have a shop do it or if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it as well. So if that is your only worry, it is preventable.

Ok thanks so let me get this right as long as the car does not have it a balance shaft elimination kit will more then likely stop it from ever walking? If it does happen then a built motor will stop it as well? I am just tring to get my facts together the reason I really looked at other cars is because I am tring to find the least problem car.But of course the Used car deal is always a gamble and thats a risk.

A properly rebuilt 7-bolt shortblock or a 6-bolt swap will have much less chance of crankwalking.

The Balance Shaft (aka "Silent Shaft") elimination is more a safety measure to prevent a failure to that "comfort feature" that may spill over into a more critical area (e.g. BS belt failure could take out timing belt and bearing siezure could harm oil pump).

As for making a selection, DSMs are by far the most supported platform (outside of Honda) in the import market, so there is a plethera of knowledge, vendors, used parts..etc to help you in the future :thumb: :dsm:

Balance shafts have nothing to do with crankwalk (which results from crankshaft thrust bearing failure) :dsm:

Ok Im confussed,So the elimination kit will not help solve this problem?

That is the reason I am looking to get the GSX I want either AWD or RWD again. The honda world is just poor to me.I know they can be quick cars but there is only one honda I will ever own and that is a S2000 but the fact that is has 240HP but then the Torque is 153 Ft/LBS thats just poor to me.Honda needs to get more in their cars. But the GSX is great 200 by 214 thats great for me.Then the aftermarket is also great as well and thats the biggest thing. But the only worry of course is Crankwalk LOL.But I have 5 months to decide and see what else comes up.

First off, ANY motor can "crankwalk", simply put the cranks thrust bearing prematurely wears out and the crank begins to move. When the clutch is depressed the crank will move towards the front cover and after enough wear it will move into the crank angle sensor (destroying it..not cheap) which makes your car undrivable. Like what was stated above, removing the balance shaft will NOT help stop crankwalk.
