I'm using a 2G GS-T Conversion in my sonata in Australia. The Sonata came with the 4g63 n/a standard from factory along with the FWD transmission similar to the eclipse GS-T (code F5M33). The Eclipse manual shows these figures, and for the Sonata, i took it from the factory brochure i have at home.
The ratios are as follows;
Eclipse GS-T FWD----------------Sonata FWD
3.090 ------------ 1ST GEAR ----- 3.083
1.833 ------------ 2ND GEAR ----- 1.947
1.217 ------------ 3RD GEAR ----- 1.285
0.888 ------------ 4TH GEAR ----- 0.939
0.741 ------------ 5TH GEAR ----- 0.756
3.166 ------------ Reverse ------- 3.083
4.153 ------------ Final ---------- 4.322
My 3rd gear is hard to get into gear when WOT, I know that i will need to look at changing the synchro gear. I am allready using Redline MTL GL-4 Spec gearbox oil. I will soon be getting the BM-Tranny FWD LSD (phantom grip style) and i want to replace the 3rd gear single synchromesh ring with the one from the Sonata when i install the LSD. I'm hoping that it will fit. What I am also hoping, is that the gear ratios can be exchanged as well, however i'm not sure if it's worthwhile, because i have never really understood the theory behind "taller" gears etc. When looking at these figures, The sonata seems to have higher numbers in each gear except for 1st gear.
(a) When referring to ratios, does a "higher" number = what is called a "taller" gear ratio?
(B) does a taller gear mean that it will take longer to rev out? or will it rev quicker?
(C) Would it be worthwhile to change these gear ratios on my fwd application to the sonata specs, particularly for the 1/4 mile?
You might be asking why i don't just bolt the sonta box straight up?. The reason is because the eclipse actually holds more oil, otherwise, they look almost identical to each other, however i'm not sure about inside. The american passenger side of the gearbox actually extends roughly 5 or 6 inches longer than the Sonata gearbox.
Any help much appreciated, thanks.
