Kansas City,
ok here we go....couple weeks ago I popped the clutch at about 5500 rpms and the car started smoking and I look at it and the outside edge of my tranny is broken...almost all the way around and the slave cylinder broke...does this mean that my tranny is broken or just the bell housing

transmission housings are cast and assembled from one piece and simply swapping around housings will require shimming to get it right, and it won't ever be "totally" right.

trust me i've been through this before.

i'd get a new one personally, or have the entire case replaced.

no

the bellhousing is only the "bowl shaped" part that the clutch and flywheel reside in. if you look closely you'll notice two lines separating the other two pieces of the tranny.

ok...well maybe you can help me here...the transmission I think is fine....but I popped the clutch at about 5500 rpm and the slave cylinder broke off and there are a couple other spots around the clutch where the transmission has holes in it...do you think that just changing the bellhousing will solve the problem?

I can't exactly afford a new one...I'm a broke college student who only works 20 hours a week making 7 bucks an hour.

replacing the bellhousing will fix the problem, but it won't be the "best" fix. but i understand the plight of a poor college student, i'm one and craigb has rebuilt my tranny twice lately and now my rear main seal is leaking, and i just started my job last week.

My uncle thinks that my 1st gear is going to be shot....do you think this is possible...since I was in first when I popped the clutch?

It will probally cost more than a whole used tranny to get everything switched over to another bell housing

Well I'm goign to be changing it myself......I hope :) trying to..I found a used one for 150 :)

If you do it yourself. Make sure that if you change out the outer race, for all the bearings that you also put the correct shims back in there. You may want to check the diff clearences also if you use the old diff in the new case.

It's not too hard, but jsut take things apart slowly and make sure of the orientation when re-installing.

Have fun!

There really is no way to tell if the gears are bad, from looking at the outside. If that is your tranny, tear it apart and post pics of the inside.
I don't see and damage to the housing leading into the interior of it. But that doesn't mean that the tranny is bad intenally.

BTW: working on cars is fun for some of us!

I know you weirdos find joy in it :) :) hehe j/k....but i hate it and I wish I didn't have to do it.....

P.S. I need some more help :( I can't get the bellhousing off. :( all the bolts are off and it just doesn't seem to want to come off... is there something I am missing????

there is a bolt on the side of the case that holds the idler gear on there, but the case will still come apart without taking that bolt out. The gear will just fall out when you seperate the case.

The case is probably just stuck on there. tap it all the way around with a dead blow or rubber mallet. It'll break free. If not you can pry it apart, just be cautious to not break the lip.

Thnx...I used a rubber mallet.....its coming apart....but the bellhousing I ordered ended up being cracked :( so I have to buy a new one...

OMG......the bellhousing DOES NOT come off the case, it is integral. you must start at the outside end, remove all the bolts holding the small cover, loosen the 5th gear mainshaft and countershaft gears, gget a puller to take them off, pull your viscous coupling off, dont lose the small ball bearing that locks the transfercase output shaft. then remove the 3 14mm nutz on the front side by the pass. end. it has a spring and ball in each one. remove the center diff. next pull up on the intermediate case and all your gears are exposed. remove the front diff and adjoining shafts. what is left when you are all done is what needs to be replaced, the whole front half of the case, good luck.

Thnx.....from what Mitsubishi has told me...the front have of the case is the bell housing....
