Alright here's the deal. I have a 97 TSI auto. According to the dealership it has a LSD (locking) rear diff [they de-coded the VIN]. I have had 3 axle shafts from junk yards. 2 were from locking cars, the first one was from a non-locker. None of them fit in my car. There is a green "cup" that goes around the spider gears on the inner CV shaft. THe shafts they keep sending me have larger bearings that don't fit in my cup. I've noticed that my inner bearings are on an 18 spline shaft and the ones they keep sending me are a 22 spline.

Are junk yards just selling me the wrong or incorrectly labeled part? Or am I just being silly trying to use my old cup and not pull it our of the rear diff (which looks like I would have to drop the diff to do so, not sure). If anyone could post and installation / removal guide for a rear axle shaft, that would be super.

You can't really decode the vin on a tsi awd to determine if it has a lsd. The vin will only tell what trim level the car has(I'm a car dealer also), and I've decoded the vin on my tsi awd to see if I had a lsd. An simple way to tell is to look in the drivers door above the sticker for the wheel and tire info. If it has a lsd then there will be a sticker telling you so. I also know that the lsd axles are bigger then the non-lsd axles from doing the swap-no lsd sticker. I know this dosen't answer your question but maybe it'll give you a piece to the puzzle

OK I got the green "cup" out of the rear end. It has 25 splines. The one that they keep sending me has 21 splines. Also didn't see and LSD stickers on the door jam. Maybe I have a non-locker w/ ABS? Its an automatic, if that helps any.

Stealerships say they only have 4 parts like this in the country and that its $550 apeice and no guarantee its the right one.

If anyone is parting out a 2g AWD car, I'd pick one up if its the same, if they are willing to work something out.
