I tried searching, but couldnt seem to find anything about this. All the way thru 1st gear, my tranny whines much like cars do in reverse. My friend with a 2g FWD doesnt have this noise, he said it was because I was AWD and it was my transfer case. Is this normal?
Also this is probably unrelated, but whenever Im accelerating in 2nd quickly and shift at high RPM (5500+) it wont go into 3rd at all. No grind or anything, it just feels like it hits a wall, and refuses to go in till the RPMs drop some. Shifting is normal at lower RPMs, and 3rd gear is the only gear that has this prob from hi RPM. Im gonna try using BG syncroshift, but I wanted to know if there is anything else I should check out for both problems.

sounds like a synchro problem to me... when you drain your tranny fluid, let us know if there is "glitter" (aka, internals destruction). you might be in need of a new tranny depending on how bad it is. does it whine in any other gears?

My first gear whined as well and my trans shifted fine until one day i lost reverse completely an took it to sheps. Reverse was not the only issue, the intermediate shaft went out so i dunno if the whine was the signs of it going bad or what.

Usually when there is a gear whine from 1st it is a bad intermediate shaft end bearing. When they are bad and loose the gear will push away and cause a whine as the contact is not where it is supposed to be. The trans is giving you a warning. If you ignore it you can ruin it in short time to the point that it may not even be rebuildable.

If a trans blocks you out of a gear you have a clutch dragging problem. Try this, but be very careful:

1) Have the car running with the e-brake off so it can roll.
2) Push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there.
3) Turn off your launch limiter in DSM link if equipped so the engine can hit 7K RPM.
4) Put the car into 1st gear.
5) Rev the engine up until you feel the car start to move forward.

If the car moves forward below 7200RPM or your limiter, your clutch is dragging.

What is your car is moving in neutral? Different problem altogether?

My tranny whines from 1st to 5th. It's loudest in first and gets progressively quieter as I shift through the gears. Also, the whining stops when I press in the clutch pedal or let off the accelerator and coast while in gear. There are no other noises or odd vibrations from the tranny and it shifts fine. Can anyone tell me what could be causing the whine and what I need to do to fix it?

FYI, I just installed a new Fidanza flywheel and clutch with new OEM throw out bearing. The tranny is from a '91 and also has the 23 spline transfer case. I was told that the tranny was rebuilt about a year ago. Could the whine be normal for a rebuilt trans while the gears are still bedding in?
