how do you tell the difference between pressure plates

I don't think there is, besides the clamping force. The ring gear on the flywheel is bigger on awd's but I believe you can bolt either pressure plate to either flywheel.

There is no difference with pressure plates for the turbo cars. All 1G/2G/FWD/AWD pressure plates are same SIZE physically. Depending on the manufacturer, there are some signs that differentiate the clamping force of each plate.
