I'm in the process of buying a 90 awd talon. he selling it for 1200 has a new motor, alt, bat, ecu, I drove it yest and it seemed fine the clutch was mushy but I'm going to replace it anyway. the shifter seemed to have been wobly, what is wrong? I want a built tranny, but I don't know what I need or how much it will cost. it went into the gears fine, reverse was fine also. I just don't like the it fells I can move it from side to side? please give me some options as far as tranny parts. I want to be able to shift with out feeling guilty.

Take your shifter knob off, pull the boot out of the console, and then move the shifter around. Pay close attention to the shaft that runs from front to back through the baseplate and shifter (its the one with the spring looking thing on it), also pay attention to the shaft that runs sideways through the shifter itself. Both of these two bolts have should have a white plastic bushing on each end right where it comes out of the shifter. If these are worn out, broke, or gone; then you're shifter will feel really loose and have alot of play in it. You see; these bushings take out the endplay from the shifter, they also take up the space in the inside diameter of the shifter, between it and the bolt. If yours are gone then you could take a couple strips you cut off a magazine cover; roll them up, and put them inside the shifter to take up that slack ( after you remove the shifter and bolts of course). To take up the endplay; get a hard piece of plastic about 1/16" thick; cut a round circle bout' the size of a nickel and then cot a hole out big enough for the bolt to go through. Place these on the ends of the shifter before you put the bolt back in. This should get the slack out till you can buy some new bushings:thumb:

i thought they were rubber? doesn't RRE sell the energy suspension bushings to solve this problem? i have the same problem so im thinking the kit from RRE will fix it?....yay or nay?....

Well, it is possible for the bushings that go around the bolts that connect the shifter to the floor to start to die, and this will cause play in the shifter, in every direction. This can be solved with new stock bushings, the Neuspeed poly bushings that were mentioned up there ^ somewhere, or the Symborski shift kit. the Symborski kit is a set of steel bushings that replace the rubber bushings and give a really precise feel to the shifter. I recommend it highly. It costs 35 dollars at MachV.com.

If you have a lot of play, like when its in 1st it looks like its in 3rd and you can move it side to side while in gear then its a small bushing on the shifter rails on the tranny. I thinks thats what you call them, where the shifter cables meet up with the arms on the tranny. Anyways on the arm that moves up and down I think, could be wrong there is a small square bushing just on the side where a large nipple from the other shifter arm sits in which allows them to both move together, if that bushing is broke then there is excessive play. The bushing looks like a small square with a hole in the centre. Its very hard to describe, you have to take the arms off if I can remember and replace that bushing. I called TRE and they explained it to me although I had a hard time understanding it even over the phone. I just made a homemade bushing from a plastic brush and its all good now.

i would check your bushings that is the usual case my mother in law has a 1987 mx-6 turbo and when its in gear it feels like it is in neutral and it was the bushings they were totally gone i would definitly check them:thumb:
