420A Transmission Questions (Manual)

I have two questions about the manual tranny for the 420a engine.
Is it normal for the car to be really weak in 1st gear? The car hardly pulls itself, and it's my first car, so I don't know if that's normal for these cars, or any car w/ a manual tranny.
I'm also having problems with reverse gear, sometimes the car makes a weird noise in reverse and won't move. I don't have money to get it checked now, but I just want to have an idea of what could be wrong.

My car does the same reverse thing that yours does, but I don't really worry about it. If I press the clutch in as far as it goes then it usually won't happen. My car has an extra reverse gear that does nothing

I haven't had any problems driving in reverse. sometimes, when going fast (5-10mph) i will hear a whine, but i don't think that's anything to worry about. sometimes, 2/10, i have trouble shifting into reverse, but usually its cuz im not pushing in on the clutch all the way.

as for 1st gear, it doesn't really take you very far. 2nd is where my power is. but im not exactly sure what it is your asking.

i think he means his car accelerates very slowly in 1st gear

Yeah, that's what I meant, so I take it that in first gear these cars don't have much power, then second and third are the ones with power? That's how it is on my car.

The problem with your reverse might be that your not all the way in the gear, giving it that weird sound when you try to push the gas in and the no movement. A trick is if your car didn't go into reverse or is having difficulty shift it into first gear first then move it back into reverse should go easier.
