shift linkage unbolted and now no reverse??

OK I am about buy this DSM fwd 1g and the guy told me that the shift linkage unbolted and he put a new bolt in it and he says now it wont go in reverse he says it doesnt grind or anything it just doesnt go into reverse, any opinions on this?

The linkage outside the tranny? the one for the cables? Check under the hood. ONly one clip holds them in place. A cotter pin type thing.

OK I have it a little more clarified, the bracket the holds the cable on the transmission the bolts fell off, so he put new ones on and now it wont go into reverse even when the car is off I tryed going through all the geras to line up all the synchros and it still didnt work. He said that the tranny never had any problems before and it went into reverse perfectly before and just one day the bracket came loose and he bolted it back on and no reverse.

Check to see if it was bolted on properly.
you can also remove the linkages and try to throw it into reverse directly through the levers on the tranny. Then you'll know whether it is the linkages or the actual tranny.
Are your cables adjustable?? They may be off...

he maybe put the wrong year linkage on the tranny. I have a 90 fwd and you must have a 90 or it won't go in gear. Or you may need to adjust it some what. I brought this my 90 fed tsi the same way. The junkyard is ur friend.
