Output shaft sliding side to side

My talon sprung a mysterious oil leak the other week and i put it up on my dads lift, i couldn't tell exaclty where it was coming from except that it was around the t-case and it wasn't motor oil, it was either tranny fluid or t-case fluid. I dropped the t-case figuring it was the seal around the t-case input shaft leaking, but when i pulled the t-case the output shaft coming out of the transmission came along with it. What could of came apart that allowed the shaft to slide? is there a clip that holds that shaft? if there is a clip, is that clip on the outside or somewhere floating around on the inside of the tranny? and finnally, if the shaft was sliding round, the seal is most likley junk, can i replace the seal without dropping the tranny? thanks in advance!

The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. The shaft moves freely but is held when the small ball and ring after the center diff is attached on the opposite side. Open up the passenger side of the tranny and check to see that its still attached.

I read somewhere on this forum that it is possible to replace that seal but it can be a bit difficult to get to since theres so little room. Mine was so old that it tore and most of it was stuck inside. I ended up getting it replaced when my tranny was rebuilt by shep =).

I found this while using the search:

replacing output shaft seal

Good luck!
