I think my trans is shot. Please help.

Need your guys help..Anybody.

i went to the dyno today to get tuned. On the way home on the parkway i pulled through a toll and the trans started to make a scraping swirling noise is the best i can describe it. It makes the noise when i drive 2,3,4,5 gear doesn't seem to be in first. Push in the clutch it stops while driving. Let of the gas it quiets down a lot while driving too. At idle i can hear a noise that kind of resembels the noise while driving and when my brother pushes in the clutch and i listen in the wheel well it stops. I thought it was the TOB but, i pulled the trans tonight too and the bearing is perfect nothing i can see is wrong. Except for when i pulled the trans apart the shield that mounts to the motor behind the flywheel was loose. The 2 bolts that hold it to the block were missing..no clue where they went. The clutch is brand new act 2600 new flywheel and TOB all with 2500 miles on them. Do you guys think my trans bite the dust? the fluid level was fine in the trans too. i had my driver side axle did have a torn boot and the insides where destroyed but i'm sure that wasn't the noise becuease when you push the clutch while driveing the noise stops. IDK anybody give me some ideas. pleaseeee
 
It might just have been the CV joint plus the loose sheild causing it...

If it were mine I'd check for shaft play and probably open up the case and look...
 
Transmission's are a completely new thing to me is it hard to open the case up and see if anything is wrong. I don't want to open it and not be able to get it back together or something you know. I grabbed the input shaft and tried to push it in and out it moved the slightest bit in and out. Don't know if thats good or bad.

Just take it apart far enough to check the synchros, gears, forks and rails.
 
Like I said if it were my car I'd be doing a full trans body cavity search.
 
i was thinking the loose sheild to. But when the trans is bolted to the engine there are 4 bolts that run through it. I would think those bolt would be holding it pretty tight. As for the CV when i push the clutch it goes away so i ruled that out as a possibility. still the TOB but it spins fine.

Once you have taken it down this far I think you should be able to see the problem..

You just need to remove the first two big parts.. Outer cover then the upper section that 5-R and the VC are in... Then you can look right in the main gearbox. If nothing is broken just put everything back together the way it was.. I'm not saying to press off every gear bearing etc.. Just do what is necessary to see inside the case.
 
i'm bringing it to a guy in my area dogbox transmissions. He's a real cool guy and is going to help me out. thanks for the help guys i'll let you know what it is when i find out.

yeah those guys at dogbox are real cool, im sure he'll take care of you, he did a tranny for a friend of mine and he's doing my trans right now as we speak...i just gotta find a new bellhousing or just an entire different case...mine has a hole in it... :thumbdown

My kids car did the same thing a week after he put a new clutch in. He pulled the trans down and found nothing worng. He put it back together and 2 weeks later it stopped completely. He pulled it back down and the entire clutch and pressure plate were trashed. He sent it to the company and they sent him a new one, no questions asked.

When you say this do mean the noise stopped or the trans stopped working?? I'm going to guess the trans stopped working only becuease if the noise stopped than there would be no reason to pull the trans. The clutch pressure plate springs are all perfectly tight and stiff but tomm. I'll go over it agian.
 
Got a call from Dogbox yesterday.

The wave clip that holds the reverse nut on or something fell out and dissappeared and it looks like it got chew up by the intermediate shaft bearing. There are couple seals that are shot and the sychros were getting worn, the trans was pretty much on its last limb anyway. The clip falling out just ate up the bearing. So i'm getting the trans rebuilt. I'll post again when i get it back. i definitily recommend this shop dogbox transmissions There super nice and explained everything that happened to trans to me so i could understand.
 
I wish I could find a good tranny shop like that in southern CA. If anyone knows of one let me know because my second gear grinds :cry:
 
Got the trans back and in. After one test drive of "Death" i worked out the bugs and its good to go. In my haste to not stay out in the 12 degree temps in my rock driveway. I didn't push the passenger side axle in as far as it could past that clip that holds it in. On my testdrive the axle popped out and all my 30 bucks in gm synchromesh(because every autozone within a 50 mile radius is out on pennz. syncromesh) spilled out onto to the ground. :rolleyes:

I put the axle back in MORE FLUID and took it for another drive and it feels good except for one thing shifting into forth it takes a second it doesn't grind you just have to hold it there for a sec or two. It doesn't do it from 5th to 4th, only 3rd to 4th. Any ideas? I figured it just has to be broken-in.
