Is it normal to be able to push the shifter into neutral from 4th or 5th without pushing the clutch in? I also have a real hard time getting it into reverse , as well as 1st to 2nd " crunch ". If I shift slow there is no crunch. Does this sound like synchros? I just ordered the symborski shifter kit and BG synchroshift fluid. I was told that could help. Any thoughts?

i have the 1st to 2nd "crunch" really bad. i have to shift below 2000rpm to get it to go in. i was told it was the syncros. i went to a tranny dude i know and he is gonna fix it for me for a really cheap price, but unless you can do it your self or know someone who is a good friend, then plan on spending some $$$. you might as well just have it rebuilt why you are at it.

Well. I hope I can get at least 6 or 7 months out of it. I was told to just buy a new tranny either a jdm one, or a 92 thru 94 instead of rebuilding the one I have. This was from a chrysler mechanic! Thanks for your info. It seems alot of people have the 1st to 2nd crunch.

Yeah, your experiences with the 1-2 crunch and trouble getting into reverse are very common with DSM trannies. You could have the thing rebuilt, but there's a lot of worn parts in a high mileage tranny so you'd be better off in the long run if you bought a new one. Or even better...give TRE a call and have them build one for you :thumb:

I too have the 1-2 crunch. I have to shift under 3000 RPM or I get a nasty grind. Makes racing not fun :(

I'm already using BG Synchroshift so I guess I'm out of luck. I installed the Symborski shift kit and it made the shift feel better but of course the grind is still there.

A few more months and maybe I can afford a tranny rebuild. I'll probably make a so-cal trip to RRE and make sure it's done right. Man, smooth shifting on my 1g would be so sweet. Right now it's notchy as hell and the 1-2 grind makes me wanna cry.

I've been inside the FWD transmissions. The AWD ones won't be too different. The only thing that needed to be replaced on the ones I've been in were syncros. The reverse problems ended up being mal-adjusted linkage, or a slightly bent counter-gear support (caused by yanking it into reverse). Both relatively easy to fix. Most folks are afraid to dig into a transmission, but all you really need are the large wrenches, snap ring pliers and a 3-prong puller to get them apart. If you've kept fluid in your transmission and don't beat on it, the synchros are the only parts that suffer any real wear. $100 from TRE.

All my other gears seem fine. However I have a 91 AWD TSI Talon and I also get the 1-2 gear grind. Defiantly makes no fun for racing. I am going to contact my local mechanic here in town and also the dealer and see what this is gonna run me to fix my synchros.
