well my friend has a 96 talon tsi awd and it has some transmission problems. it wont stay in first. like you can put it into first and as soon as you start letting out the clutch it will pop its self out of gear. all the other gears are fine though. any ideas on what it is and how much it would be to fix it

thanks
phil

I have the same problem with 2nd in my 93 Talon, its the synchros in the tranny.

so if the syncros are dead... dyou need a full tranny rebuild, or just swap the syncros? Mine does that too in 1st... and grinds like hell into 2nd...

Other than a tranny rebuild... is there anything that can be done to reduce that grinding? (eg. fluids?, bushings?)

a full tranny rebuild is the best option, you can get a rebuild kit from http://www.fullthrottlespeed.com for about 400 bux, if you can't afford that, it is possible to have just the synchros replaced, if you don't know what your doing and take it to a tranny shop it will cost well over 600 bux, and they will consider it a full rebuild, and probabl replace anything else that is worn in the tranny, if you do take it to a tranny shop, your best bet is to pull the tranny yourself and take that in, you would save a few hundred by doing that...I've been looking for a new tranny altogether because i don't know what kind of shape mine is in internally. Looking for a new tranny is definately an option, if you get lucky you may be able to find one on ebay for cheaper than a rebuild and with low mileage.

I have the same problem too. Here is another thread about it where some other ideas are presented.
