Hey all, Brand new to the DSM family and ready to wrench! I just bought a 94 Tsi AT which seems to have a few tranny issues... hard dnshifts into 1st, and lack of overdrive. So, i'm in the market for another one. I think i'm just going to buy a used trannie off someone and have it checked out (maybe add a shift kit or whatnot) before installing it. Then I can play with (i mean, learn from) my old one all I want! The only problem, I'm not too sure which transmissions would bolt-up without too much fabrication.

I'm sure it's disussed somewhere in the forum, but I just can't seem to find it... but how compatible are 2g and 1g AUTO trannies? And how compatible are N/T and Turbo Automatic transmissions? And are the N/T inner components of the same strength to handle the power of turbo? I read a bit of stuff about it, but the authors weren't specific as to whether or not they were talking about 5-speeds or Automatics... And MT info just doesn't do a whole lot for me. Could somebody PHULEEEEEZ help clear all this up for me? Cuz I'm getting sooo sick of having a top speed of 55 mph! It's killing me... :(

PS: I read something about the lack of overdrive possibly being because of a failed end clutch... if so, does anyone think the tranny i have now is salvageable w/o too much hassle? Besides the prob with dnshtfs into 1st and no OD, it runs great...
 
A 2G N/T auto trans will NOT bolt to your car, it's completly different.

a 2G Turbo AT trans will bolt to your car...making it work is another issue.

a 1G AT trans will bolt to your car, and should work without issue.
 
thanks for the info, kyle! I guess I'm looking at finding a 1G Turbo AT, then. Though I'm a little curious as to that you mean about making a 2G Turbo AT work in a 94'... is it tough? sounds like a challenge! then again, I definitely don't know enough to be taking on challenges, even with a trannywizard mechanic friend... I only was asking about 2Gs becuase I was under the impression that the newer the trannie, the better.

oh yeah. In all those cross compatibilities I forgot to ask about AWD transmissions, since that seems to be what everyone on here is selling (besides N/T) ... they are the same thing, just with a transfer case... right?

By the way, are these 1 and 2G trannies geared the same (AWD and FWD too)?

I thought I heard something about higher top speed out of an AT... but better top end with MT cams.

And as a side note, is the gearing on an automatic transmission switchable? If I wanted, can I gear her up for obscene top-end? I know in my bike, we could always play with the gear ratios to get shifting in the powerband and gear for ideal bottom or top-end performance.
