As many of you here have had the SAME problem as me, I wanted to post a successful fix for my car. I will give the specs of the car and problem and hopefully this might help you out as well.
My car: 93 GS-T 6 Bolt
Clutch: ACT2600, 6 Puck race disk, stock flywheel
For the clutch install: Didn't have time to resurface the flywheel, so we scuffed it up a bit. It wasn't in rough shape at all. New Throw-out bearing is a must! Also, a new master cylinder was required because it was leaking inside the cabin.
When we started up the car, there was a TERRIBLE grinding metal-on-metal noise. After hours of fiddling with bleeding the clutch and adjusting the pedal, NOTHING worked. Finally, I used some good ole' redneck engineering and rolled it out into the cul-de-sac and launched it with all my pent up anger. Something "set" and bam, it worked!
So we adjusted it enough but the pedal would only engage about 1/4 inch from the floor. I drove the car this way for THREE months because I hated the car so much from the nightmare clutch install.
Finally, after reading all the threads here, I ordered the extended slave cylinder rod. I thought only Taboo carried the part but after researching, I found dsmparts.com who seemed to have a more streamlined ordering system. Two days later, I had the part.
Last night, I had the slave cylinder rod installed. Keep in mind I will never work on this car again after the clutch. Nothing seemed to change. So, he adjusted the clutch pedal father away from the master cylinder and now, it engages HALF WAY up!
Cliffs notes:
New Master Cyl. before clutch
PITA ACT2600 install
Horrible noise when started
Launched car b/c I was angry and suddenly it ran
Was "always engaged"
Bled and adjusted and it engaged 1/4 inch off the floor
Longer slave rod & pedal adjustment and it works PERFECT
Total Spent:
ACT 6-puck disc and Pressure Plate: $75
TOB, tranny fluid, etc: $50
Ruined American Eagle Jeans from forgetting to seat the axles before pouring tranny fluid in: $45
Longer slave rod: $40
Master Cylinder and Labor: $80
Clutch adjustment labor/slave cyl install: $40
Having an ACT2600 actually WORK in a dsm: Flippin' Priceless!!
Actually, the ACT2600 with Fidanza lightened flywheel worked just fine in my 2g. So maybe I'm lucky or just determined. I hope you can figure out your clutch problems too.
