Sorry guys, new to this thing....94 TSi AWD with 1990 engine and trans... I was driving home the other night and my driveshaft snapped taking the rear third of the transfer case with it...I was able to secure the Driveshaft so it wouldn't drag and finished the drive home. I'm waiting for a new transfer case (my spare transfer case was a 23 spline and doesn't mount onto the trans) and I have a spare driveshaft. I removed the busted driveshaft and the remaining part of my transfer case. I was able to drive it to work as a FWD (1/2 mi each way). I can't floor it (rpms go up but the car doesn't go any faster like a worn clutch) but it seems to drive fine. Has anyone done this? Am I destroying something? Any danger to the rear end or trans? Thanks in advance....

Like WOW dude - It's the VC's in your Tranny COOKING when you rev & it does'nt go anywhere - & YES you are basically "towing" your Rear End - & of course we ALL know you can't TOW AWD DSM's - I'm glad you made it home but you need to PARK THE SUMBITCH before you destroy whats left of it - PERIOD.

so, even with the drive shaft completely removed and the rear wheels being able to spin freely, damage is being done the the rear end? I was more concerned with damage to the tranny....I know I won't be doing any road trips with the car like this soon but I didn't think any damage can be done to the rear this way. My car isn't being driven anymore until I secure a transfer case, it has been replaced by my rollerblades as my transport to work.....

Buck, I think you mean he cooking the VCU (viscous coupling unit) in the center diff by doing that. The CV's are on the axles. :)

You can't drive the car until you fix this.

Steve

I kinda figured he didn't mean my Constant Velocity joints... But, I guess I was cooking my VCU's that night.... I just wanted to make it home and not spend mad $$ on a flatbed towtruck... I already knew I'm going to dump a pile of money to fix this. Since you're in St. Charles, do you have any ideas where I can get a 22 spline transfer case locally? I'm eyeballing some on ebay but I was looking to get one quicker (like this weekend).

Where's (and what) AMS and and where is this meet? I'm there.. i'll even skip my round of golf that day. Again, although I've own this car since new, I haven't really been into it until I got it back up and running earlier this year... I'm a bit out of the loop.
