A few things. First is the fact that my car has started to develope a ticking noise...yes I did search the forums and looked at what other people talked about in their "lifter Ticking Problem" articles. I don't even know where to find the lifters what they are or what they do, however my ticking noise seems to be coming from the timing belt area...is this possible? My car has about 80k and just had a new standard trans put in, got an oil change yesterday. NO I don't know what kind of oil they used or what kind of air filter I have. I do know that I have virtually no money being a college student, so any cheap and usful help is desperately appreciated. One other thing...in the past week I have noticed my car getting a little jerky when I'm breaking, any idea why? :thumbdown

Well if it is teh lifters, it should not rattle very loud. jsut a faint ticking sound.. but if your driving it, and this should happen within days, if it gets louder it is probabbly a bearing wore out. that means your rods is hitting your crank making that noise.. and will destruct your engine... ticking is pretty well normal, u can 3rd gen eclipse lifters to help. the lifters are under teh valve cover, teh very top part of teh motor, where your plugs wires go through it.. if your not the least bit knowledgable, i wouldn't recomend tryign anything.. if it doesn;t et loud within day u should be alright to drive it.. but if it gets any loude.. DO NOT DRIVE IT... as far as your braking, if your whell shakes back and forth that means you arer braking to hard, and it has warped your rotors, which means they need turned ( a shop will shave them falt again) or needs to be replaced.. jsut try not to brake so soon and hard, but to gradually brake slow and easy. or if you do get on it hard,, brake let up and brake that way it will allow your rotors to cool inbetween hard braking.

Justin.. :talon:

thanks for the help, the detailed explanation is very much appreciated because I could barely tell you how to put in windshield washer fluid if I needed to. My expertise lies only in detailing cars not the mechanics. Something I notice...I don't know if this could make any difference but I recently tried getting gas at a different gas station Mobil vs Sunoco where I usually go and the ticking seems to have slightly subsided...ps no it does not increase with time I just wish my car didn't sound so loud while idle.

 why is my car so loud...I just had to replace my transmission and now my engine sounds really loud, I'm beginning to think this car will have infinite problems. is anyone optimistic enough to think this could be easy and hopfully cheap to fix. The noise seems to be coming from the timing belt but I dunno. All I know for sure is that it is very loud when idle!

then it is probably just the lifters like stated above. Lifter tick is totally natural with 4G63T engines, because of the diversity of the oil pressure. At idle a 4G63 has around 15-30 psi of pressure, while cruising down the road at 3000 rpm around 55-60 psi, when under full boost with rpm over 3000 its not uncommon to have 75-100 psi.

If your really worried about this tick, take the car to a mechanic and ask if the ticking is just lifter tick, or if its is Rod knock.

Rod Knock=BAD
Lifter tick=Normal

If you wanna try something to help quiet the lifters.....Try some 20W-50 Motor Oil on your next oil change with a half quart of Marvel Mystery Oil put it also. The Marvel Mystery Oil will loosen up any deposits that may have gotten into your lifters and help smooth the tick out. The thicker viscosity oil will keep the lifters pumped up longer instead of letting them bleed off quicker with thinner 10W-30 oil.

If the car runs good, I am sure its just lifter tick.....I know when I sit in the McDonalds drive-thru for what seems like forever...my lifters tick a little bit, but its definetly better than it was with the 10W-30 oil I used to run.

Hope it works out for you.

for someone NOT very mechanically inclined......you picked a expensive maintanence car.
Might wanna learn a little about these cars before some lucky Underhanded Mechanic sees you coming and tells you the Muffler Bearings are going dry, and the Blinker Fluid is low. Might wanna go ahead a get that Kanuder Valve Checked out too before the KaNuder starts acting up and your oil density goes through the roof!

LOL.

good times.
