Synchronizers
Manual transmissions in modern passenger cars use synchronizers to eliminate the need for double-clutching. A synchro's purpose is to allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact. This lets the collar and the gear synchronize their speeds before the teeth need to engage
---Perhaps I should save up for a Shepard Racing transmission.)Not in the slightest. Synchronizers can only do so much. The dinky little synchros in DSM transmissions will thank you for the small amount of effort and consideration that double-clutching during downshifts takes. True that the need for double-clutching is reduced, but in that vein, downshifting at all isn't needed with the power of modern braking systems. Still, some of us prefer to motor instead of just driving.14.5 drift said:Was that a joke defiant?
