changing 5th gear or final drive: I know of the staight cut noisy 5th gear available but does anyone know of a taller final drive or 5th gear available that isn't noisy and will work in a 91 gsx manual tranny? Example: maybe a galant awd final or 5th since their 1st gear is a common swap. Basicaly I wan't the car to be at a lower rpm highway speeds or just more range throughout all the gears.

Thanks. :dsm:

as far as i know i believe rre has that really really long 5th gear. and there the only ones. i talked to a guy that has it and he said its nice since its so low for crusing in fifth,BUT, you have to be doing at least 80 in fouth to use it since its such a low gear. so when your crusin at 60mph either stick with what you have or chill in 4th gear untill your doing 80+mph

You can use the FWD 5th gear in an AWD, it's noticably taller.

If you REALLY want a high gear, there are custom ones avaliable. I don't know why you would want that on a car with a normal 4th gear, to be honest.

I think I will probably try the FWD 5th gear sometime, just out of curiosity.

Yeah, I have the AWD fifth gear in my FWD and it lowered the engine speed by about 600 rpm when I'm cruising on the freeway. The car feels more relaxed and smoother.

don't you mean you have the FWD 5th gear in your AWD?

Nope,

If you put the FWD 5th gear in an AWD you end up with a shorter ratio, as in, the engine spins faster for a given speed. Here's another way to look at it; the FWD 5th in an AWD will lower your top speed.

i remeber in my 90 gst that second gear went much longer than my awd's, so what about swapping the gears? do you know what 3rd and 4th go to? I never really topped those out.

I'll confirm that. I went by the info from jon at TRE and put the fwd 5th in my AWD and it shortened it when I wanted it taller. Now I have to put the AWD 5th back in. What a waist of time and $ that was. THANKS JON!!!!!!! :thumbdown

I called shep racing for a tranny rebuild, and asked them about running the longer 5th gears, they said that its bad for the drivetrain, puts to much strain on it.

We copied the 5th gear from a different model JDM transmission.

As for 5th gear being bad on the drivetrain consider this, is a reduction in engine rpms bad?

The taller gears reduce engine rpm, give better gas mileage, and reduce interior noise because the engine is running slower.

Everything that is in front of that taller 5th gear now runs at a lower speed, (power steeering pump, water pump, alternator, AC pump etc...)

It's like this, your 60,000 mile timing belt replacement can be extended to 66,000 miles.

Let's say you're cruise speed is 4000 rpm or above, the car is not in closed loop. Use the taller gear and it will be.

does the same apply for the 2g..

I have a GST

cruising

2,450 - 55mph
3,500 - 95mph

I have a 97 AWD
60mph.=2450rpm
Not for sure past that. I'm lucky to do 63.
