What the F happened? (pic)

Ok so I am parked out side a video store and noticed that my front passenger wheel was covered in shit. I noticed that it was covered in tranny fluid. When I look under the car there is a huge puddle and this is what I saw. The weird part is that the trann never made noise or had any grinds what so ever. I ever drove it about 5 mile home being careful and it still made no noieses or had any grinds. Judging the by puddle on the ground I lost 90% of the fluid. I have another tranny but I was wondering if I could just trade that portion of the case. I have heard that there is a large nut under there that will sometimes loosen up a bit. I wonder if it was pretty loose and thats what caused the gears to run through the case. Any help would be great.

Ah! EXACTLY what happened to me!

Either one of your shaft bearings failed, enabling the shaft to thrust back and forth. Or one of your 32mm nuts loosened, letting the gear contact the case. The gear ate through the housing. More than likely your transmission is DOA, so start saving up for a new one.

Atually what you are lookinga at is the viscous coming therough the end case. Pull off that case, either your viscous exploded or the center diff bearings went.

You're right, it is the VC. I thought the holes were higher up than they are.

So then I should just quit messing around and pull it. I have another tranny that I can swap out but I was hoping that it would just magically be a lose nut or something.

I'd pull it. Chances are there is metal EVERYWHERE inside of it. Even if the VC/CD is the only thing damaged, it will need to be cleaned out.
