What a night and what a rush! A huge thanks to Paul Volk, 99gst_racer for lending me his 26" Hoosier QTP's on Motegi Traklite 2's!

No changes were made to the car other then the wheels/tires from my 11.812 @ 115.69 from two nights ago. That pass was on 16" stock gst wheels and Toyo Proxes 4's in 225x50x16.

I was nervous as all get out for the first pass. I'd never launched on slicks and wasn't sure what to expect. Pressures were at 12 psi rear and 12.5 fronts, we had planned on starting with them higher but that's what they were set at and I wasn't chasing down an air compressor. I raised my launch rpm to 5500 and got in the lanes.

11.572 @ 116.12
1.609 60'
7.363 @ 92.72 1/8th

I was so excited, I laughed my way all the way back to my parking spot! I knew that was good enough for #5 on the 14b list w/out nitrous! I was surprised that the tires broke loose on the launch so I decided to try launching at 5250 which was my setting for the street tires. The track was ice cold, all passes were in the mid 50's and just about everyone I heard from said they were having a hard time getting traction. Still that 1.60 felt unbelievable! My accessory belt was squealing upon starting the car back up, it was way loose, tightened it up and headed back to the lanes.

11.676 @ 116.52
1.635 60'
7.444 @ 91.55 1/8th

Pass felt good, very little tire spin off the line, but there just wasn't enough oomph to make the 60 foot happen. Something felt goofy with the clutch though, nothing I've experienced before. Still was nice to back up the first pass. With the clutch acting weird I told Paul I would "go for broke" and turn the launch up to 6000 and see what happens. Quick adjustment with Link and back to the staging area.

The launch was all kinds of squirrely! You can't really see it in the video but it felt much more dramatic in the car! I was counter steering both directions to keep it going straight down the track and banged second to stop the madness! I knew the pass was good though and I had a smile all the way to the ticket booth.

11.541 @ 116.38
1.571 60'
7.332 @ 92.35 1/8th

So it wasn't enough to move me past Dave Womer to go up the list, but that's ok I was psyched with the passes tonight. Still something very strange with clutch engagement driving back to my parking spot so I knew that was the last pass. After sitting for maybe an hour and cooling down the car, I drove home with the strange clutch engagement gone. It had to be from heating the crap out of it. It felt grabby with a little clunk through the drivetrain upon engagement. Oh well, it was a $50 used ACT 2600 clutch I picked up 3 years ago! I'll look into replacing that, making sure everything else is healthy, and looking into my own wheels and slicks for next year. No more passes for 2012 as I'm very happy with the car and I don't want to risk the clutch when I have to drive home from the track.

Also of note, with that rediculously light wheel/slick combo the car weighed in on the scales at 2595lbs. with me in it! I'm going to see if Paul can weigh the wheel/tires so I can get an estimate of what my car weighs on the streets, but overall that's quite a bit lighter then I expected!

Huge thanks to my supporters! You guys gave me the tips, tricks, and parts to run this kind of time on the 14b! Thanks!

I bet this wheel/slick combo saved about 60lbs of rotating mass!

That's really cool, Shane!!! Nicely done!

BTW.. thats a pretty fast truck in the video!

Thanks MaryBeth! That truck moved out! Ran a 11.855 @ 113.75 on that pass. Smoked me on the reaction time which is why he "won". Not sure what other runs he made as I was a little busy, but there were some very fast cars there that's for sure. Decided the only negative thing about racing on slicks with a 14b is you're going to be running against some serious muscle in the other lane! You can't even hear my car running while you're in it, much less on the videos! Tough to keep your eyes on what you're doing when they're pulling the front wheels in the lane next to you!

You running a evo 3 first? Whats the plans for the off season?

Stock first as far as I know. To be honest the trans builder didn't exactly give me specs, just said this will do what you want it to ha ha! Off season will be looking to build a savings fund to purchase a new clutch and some wheels and slicks of my own. Not exactly cheap and I'm a strict budget kind of person. We know these cars can cut high 1.4 60's at least so there's more in the car as it sits, but it'll have to wait until the budget allows. I plan to go through everything on the car as well, all new fluids, make sure everything is tight, and probably lose a couple spare pounds here and there. I definately can do something with the wiring harness as it's kind of a mess with all the useless connectors. I won't be in too big a rush though, my goal was to beat 11.642 which was Leon's time when I first decided I wanted to go after 14b times. It was the "awd record" at that time which of course has been passed significantly by others. I can't see me ever being able to be serious enough with the car to chase down Joe Bucci, and there are obviously others who can or should be coming out with those abilities. I'm not worried though, without trying to sound too prideful I'm very pleased with what I've accomplished. As of this time only 4 people have ever gone quicker on the 14b without nitrous. It's elite territory, even though I give them all the credit for showing me how to get here! I'll get quicker I'm sure, but eventually I'll want to switch up the setup to something else as it'll be way cheaper to get faster then continuing the 14b stuff.

If money is tight, I'd suggest one of them XTD's like I run on 14b power I think they'd last forever. I was able to launch the shit out of my car with it. I had several 1.65 60's in a heavy car with hard tires.

Also I don't know what your track is like, but where I go you have to go thru the water box, so you always end up with water on your tires. I do a little quickie burnout just to get the water off the tires, and it helps a bit.

Good luck next season, seems like your just a better launch away from having the awd 14b no nitrous record!

Your car looks so undramatic going down the track it's crazy. LOL

Congrats again!

Again...just sick. The fact that you are on stock 7.8:1 pistons really proves you are making some great power too. IMHO, I think that you should run a 24 slick. While those 26s were far better than your streets, I think the 24s would be optimal. I'm just gonna go ahead and say that if you were on 24s last night, you might only have have Nate and Joe in front of you...

I think even just being on a warmer track would've made a huge difference. Car might not have made the same power, but the 60' would have made up for it. I have no idea what I'm going to do about a clutch, clearly being on slicks puts a much harder beating on a clutch then on streets. The car drives now just like it always has, so that tells me the clutch was slipping and heating up pretty bad, once cooled it's ok so I didn't do any permanent damage.

Thanks! It does look undramatic doesn't it?!? I think it has alot to do with being next to some nasty muscle cars with so much noise and with them being as fast or in two of the races much faster then me. I didn't think it looked so undramatic on street tires when I was the one handing out the beatings LOL! Being in the slicks lanes changes that aspect for sure!

7.8:1 stock shortblock with supposedly up to 180,000 miles on it! And it came from a jumped timing scenario and I had to dremel smooth the tops of the pistons! I too agree, I still think the 24.5"s are optimal and I may have been quicker on them. But, I also think it showed 26"s aren't necessarily terrible.

Overall, there's alot of what-ifs that could make the car quicker, but it ran what it ran and I'm very pleased with that! :hellyeah:

Agreed, 26s work for sure. One thing that I've heard from time to time is that the 26s are rough on the drivetrain. Didn't want to say that before you ran though! I'm sure your clutch disc is bright blue! LOL

It just goes to show, how little not so serious mods can get you 11's.

It is a very simple setup, but it's been a long time on this simple setup to get it dialed perfectly to run like this. Combine that with alot of weight loss and quite a few trips down the track to practice my seat time. So to me I think I've shown how sticking with a simple setup can work, getting faster year after year, when you really dial it in and work on your driving! People tend to give up on setups very quickly instead of trying to extract everything they can out of them.

Also I was looking at my progression. Which is also in my project log I need to update.

More than 2 seconds and 23+ mph.....that's HUGE.

Quite the progression indeed...I myself should have got to the strip once at least to get a few runs in.

Never got around to it..So next year will start my own progression. On a very simple setup as well.

Come and cut out some weight for me.That would help alot.

Goodluck :thumb:

Indeed they are! The BF's Dodge Daytona broke a gear off reverse, then an input shaft, and now 3 DSS level 5 axles. The only change was going from 24" slicks to 26"'. Amazing what traction can do.

.... but on a side note, we think that the DSS axles came from a batchof improperly heat treated ones...

That's the best part.. the fact your car is so unassuming!! :rocks:

Congrats dude....I concur with Phil, that when it comes time to buy a set of slicks/wheels for yourself, I suggest hunting for 24" or 24.5" OD slicks and 15" wheels. Get the lightest stuff you can. IMHO the traction difference between 24" and 26" isn't as much use to a 14b setup as the 1-2lb difference in rotating weight of the smaller tire. On a cold crappy track, either will spin. on a warm/prepped track in ideal conditions, either will dead hook.

Any logs? what was the rpm through the traps at 116mph?

Wow...yeah that's crazy. Uh oh.....shame on DSS!

Yeah, broke the splined ends clear off. A "shear" break, as it's called... indicating brittleness. DSS states those axles were good for 1200HP or something crazy. He's estimating that the Daytona is putting down around 550-600HP, so they should be fine! We shall see what comes of it.
