Hey all-

The day has finally come! Just got back from the dragstrip, Lebanon Valley Dragway, in NY state. This was my first time out since October of 2007, and, first time out on slicks. Before I go further, I want to thank Bullett, for getting me and the Talon to the strip. I could not have done this without him. He also coached me along as this was the first time out with slicks. So, many thanks to him!

First pass this morning was....I couldn't believe [email protected] a 1.57 60'! This launch felt like nothing I've felt before in the car....crazy.
1/8 mile was [email protected].

Really, I didn't think I'd get right into it. So, at 9:07am, the 12.0 barrier came down.

The second pass, I was reminded of my good ol friend, 12.0. I bogged to a 1.81 60' and ran, you guessed it, [email protected].

Run #3 [email protected] with a 1.63 1/8 was [email protected]
Run #4 [email protected] with a 1.57 1/8 was [email protected]
Run #5 [email protected] with a 1.57 1/8 was [email protected]
Run #6 [email protected] with a 1.62 1/8 was [email protected]

That's it....rain was supposedly coming...I wasn't getting any quicker, so we packed it up as mission accomplished.

Some interesting numbers actually, conditions changed quite a bit during the day, weather and track both. Maybe the reasons as to why the numbers are a bit different. For instance the 11.75 run netted a 113 trap but the 1/8 trap was over 94. First pass, the 11.81, 1/8 trap was just under 90 with a strong 116 on the top. Runs 3-6 I was fairly consistent with launches and including the first run had three 1.57's, the 1.62, and the 1.63.

All in all, a great day! After the 11.81 and 11.80, alll the rest was gravy. The goal was to place the car in the 11's where it should have been some time ago. So, the 11.75 and 11.79 passes solidified that.

We think the car has the potential to run 1.4X 60 foot times in the future. I think I have to work on trying out diffrent shift points with the taller slicks as well. It seemed to us that I was shifting to quickly out of 1st gear , which meant before the 60' mark. I have always done this, partially because I always had to drive 100 miles home. So, I've been talked to about driving the car a bit harder!

There's definitely more on the table for sure. I'm just happy that I cracked that 12.0 nut.

Thanks again Bullett!!!

A friend was there with a camera, so hopefully he'll post some shots up here. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there was no video.

The new chapter has begun. The 12's chapter started back in October 1997, 11+ years ago. I'm hoping this 11's chapter may be a bit shorter!!!

Thanks for reading,

please tell more information on the boost levels an such. The mighty 14b... I have 200k on my 92 with a supposed original 14b with no shaft play and I push 20psi through it daily. My 90 runs 14-15 psi through it and feels quite strong for only having an exhaust and a k&n on it.

Congrats Phil! I knew you'd crack that nut! I'd say it's time to chase down the record, but instead I'll tell ya, enjoy what you've accomplished for a while! You'll be knocking on Pneumo's door soon enough. Definately post some details, maybe I'll pm ya for some tips as my car is about 2 weeks from being track worthy.

This was the only one I snapped as our conversation was much more interesting. I'm sure I'll see you there again. Congrats and Good luck.

Awesome work!!! There is nothing better than seeing low #'s out of the 14b

Congrats again, man. You know that was no problem. We had some fun, eh? Just so much more fun to get the "work" out of the way on the first run.

Phil's in the upper 5's (as in 1.5's) without working the slick real hard. As you can tell, he can be very consistant. This is all old style launch though (as in no 2 step). Add in the 2 step, lower the pressure and he's looking at the possibility of 4's.

I've been talked to about driving the car a bit harder!

LOL:p Heh heh, I'd say you're getting there.

A friend was there with a camera, so hopefully he'll post some shots up here.

Yeah, AWDream, what magazine were you from again, LOL? Gotta love LVD :thumb:

Whats with the patch plate on the rear bumper, over the exhaust?

Amazing, my shop has a 14b project that is into high 10's but the engine set up is far from stock, the fact that your engine is so close to being "blueprint" and the car is still pulling 11.75 is amazing.

Hi Guys!

kahl23--Thanks for the props!

Boost at 21psi

Fuel is VP C16

Race weight = 2,605 lbs. weighed in yesterday at LVD

BleedingSilver--I ran 21psi as stated above. I think 20 on pump gas daily may be a bit much, 16 seems to be the sweetspot for this turbo for the daily grind. You can definitely make great power with these stock turbos. Good Luck!

SBstar--Shane--Thanks man!!! It's just starting to sink in that the monkey really is off my back!
It is a nice feeling of accomplishment, and closure on being stuck at 12.0. Granted, as I've stated elsewhere, I have not been active in the last 5 years with the drag racing. Yesterday, was like a make it or break it for me. So, my plans are to try to be more active with it this year for sure. Hope it will happen like that. And, you are right, Bullett stated the same----enjoy the current success....and I am and will. Really I'm not even thinking about the all time record just yet.....but it is within reach for sure. Generally, it is me against my driving. Not so much me against anyone else anymore. But, who wouldn't want to sit at the top, again, in my case. Either way, we are a unique group, us 14b guys, and it's truly plenty enough for me at this time in my life. Also, any help you want with your project, I'm there. Call on me when you are ready. Like I've said, couldn't be where I am without others like my buds Bullett up here and AWDream that took those great photos.

DJ---thanks to you for that great engine shot!!! I do remember you with a camera now.
Thanks for the props as well. And, it was definitely cool talking with you. Anytime you'd like some help with your car, let me know, I miss being around the DSM guys. One thing I did see that I mentioned to Bullett is that you have extreme amounts of negative camber on your rear wheels, correctable with the adjustable rear upper arms--ingalls?
Correcting that alone will aid in your launch. Talk to you later and thanks again!

punishment--thanks for coming up here and acknowledging my accomplishment with the Talon! I appreciate it!

AWDream--Doug-- WOW! Those pics are great! Thanks again for all the support yesterday, and for calling frontdriver, thanks to him as well, finally for the pics, not only for me, but, so that the guys up here can get a feel for the day. I was glad to catch up with you again. Hopefully, I will see you over the summer.

Well Bullett, what can I say? You were right. "Put the slicks on, and don't change anything and you'll be there." Again, you were right. Thanks for getting me to my last three outings and being there to watch those launches and analyze the situation. You were key in the recent quest to go 11's.

And, yes, it was nice to get the "work" done on the first pass, and essentially completing the day on the third pass. It was a perfect scenario....even with that 12.0 second pass. I was being reminded of my "roots" ....LOL. I know we're all supposed to remember our roots, just didn't think it'd be so fast.

The end of an era though....the era of 12.0

I'm anxious about the new beginning....can't wait to see what it brings!

Thanks a million...

spoonman--the car was slowly being transformed into a road race set-up, the plate is merely a heat shield. I have melted the bumpers on both my EVO and my Forester XT at the roadcourse. I chose to leave it on that's all.

Thanks for the props on my runs, I appreciate it. Actually, my engine is all original 80, 600 miles....still has balance shafts, never been opened up. Turbo oil/coolant lines have never been disconnected. Switching of valve covers, that's it. Sounds like you have an interesting 14b effort as well, congrats! Thanks again!

Well, mission accomplished!

11.7! 14B!:thumb:

That's impresive you're still on the stock "wimpy" 90 cams too eh? How well are you holding boost into your shifts? Did the external wastegate help with that?

Yep......My boost holds rock solid and yes, the Tial external did most definitely do that.

I have cams on the shelf......and balance shaft removal kit....at some point!

Over on our local forum I have a thread with ideas about maxing out the 14b. That was one of my first suggestions was the external wastegate. Definately something I'll have to run in the future. I know you will, but keep us updated on what cams you throw in, and how it effects holding boost as well.

BTW those pictures are great! A true testament to the photographer.

Do you dare tell them where your base timing is set LOL.

I'm still amazed at what this car is doing.

About the rear camber on my car... I wasn't expecting it to be that bad. I had the same set up on my fwd and it wasn't bad at all. I didnt' take into consideration all that added weight in the rear of an awd.

Haaa!

Thanks DJ! I appreciate the praise....

Yeah, with that much negative you are losing some contact patch.....don't worry, you'll be in the 12's this year I'm sure....first get those injectors flowed.....

Base timing! I remember reading those threads from years ago talking about some crazy base timing numbers.

EDIT: 3 bolt rear?

Negative, 4 bolt rear.

I would like to have some runs datalogged, and have the advantages that pneumo has to make on the spot changes at the track. I'd also like to be able to see knock count and stuff like that. I may have had some heatsoak issues even with the EVO frontmount. So, it would have been nice to monitor and make adjustments accordingly. Maybe in the future. For now, it's just the ECU and AFC. Maybe I will choose to run that two-step launch set up as well. I have never tried it out, and remember when some of my friends had the set up. I just always drove it myself. It was recommended to me by another local that has been into this for some time. He thinks it means tenths on the big end. So, that's another thought. I have another 100 plus lbs. of weight to come out as well, including running a stub exhaust and further reducing weight. Plenty more to do, but as the car sits, I'm sure my driving has left a bit on the table. I mean, I got into it very quickly and I'm happy and proud of that, but, I couldn't have maximized the potential in 6 passes. So, lots to think about and ideas to listen to. Ideas?

if you look closely, you can see the rear tires wrinkling on the "tire heat" launch.

You should of asked me. I had my pocketlogger I would let you use. Hell I even told I had it. I would actually be really interested in peaking at those logs myself.

Yesterday was the first day I used my studderbox and it was waaay easier than the feather/slip approach. Previously my best 60' was 1.95 with numerous 2.1's fishtailing off the line but yesterday with the studderbox that was my worst even boggin off the line. My best was 1.82. With more practice I'm sure I'll be able to get a lot more out of the hole now usind studderbox.
