OK, I am going to the drag strip tonight. I am going to race my bone stock 92 GS-T auto. I am also removing the engine on Sunday for a rebuilt motor that I am working on (Details on that motor will be for another thread. :thumb: )
I've never ever raced before in a drag track. I am looking for any pointers to help me get a better time. I am racing against my co-worker in his nitrous powerd 96 Accord.

Don't leave any extra weight in your car. Anything you can remove will help (spare tire, passenger seat, etc)

Don't wait for the green light. Stage so that the second staging light just comes on and try to leave on about the last yellow light before green.

At your power level you might want to power brake a little? Maybe someone with a similar car/mods/auto might have some insight.

If you can throw on a boost controller really quick you could go faster. A new engine is in the works right? (hint hint) THIS COULD REALLY MESS UP YOUR CAR, only consider it if you really want to win and don't care about trashing your car. An underfueled knocking car is often slower than a good running rich low boost car.:barf:

Good luck!

Seth

Thanks for the pointers. I am not going to have much time do some of these. I will take out the rear seat and the spare tire though. I have a boost controller though. How much should I dial up the boost? I believe he is running a 100 shot of nitrous. This guy is talking plenty of smack at work now. I've been pretty modest. I had no plan on doing this, now everyone at work is telling me that he said he is going to wipe the floor up with me.

There are basically 2 types of manual boost controllers.

These threads pretty much sum it up.

Do you have an aftermarket boost gage (the stock one won't tell you the truth)?

If so I would try to run around 14 or 15 psi. Again, only if you don't mind potentially blowing up your car. The only reason I suggested a boost controller at all was that you said you would be pulling the motor on Sunday.

If not, without a boost gage this is tricky. If run too much boost your car might be slower. If you run less boost than you are running now with a bcs you will be slower.

Let us know how it goes!

Seth

Yes, I am pulling the motor on Sunday. I just really want to know for myself what this car will do stock.

Cool. Don't let smack talking make you do anything you don't want to do. Who gives a crap what some trash talking office guy says?

A 100 shot for him will make it tough on you. Hopefully you can get him off the line.

Time for me to go home.

Go stock(ish) '92 GST!

Seth

Make him really nervous about racing you. That way he will turn up the nitrous pressure an maybe blow his engine LOL. Cut off ## muffler an take off the air filter. Windows up and AC off. Go out in ## drive way an practice power braking. See what rpms you can maintaing without moving, u cant win if u red light. Good luck

Lets not be rice and do stupid sh**. Do not touch your boost if you are stock. You need a boost gauge, and controller. Just focus on having fun. You will probably not win. Especially because this is your first time at the track. It takes practice.

Your stock fuel system can hold 16psi so you're not going have to worry about blowing anything up if you go 14-15. And yeah, do the MAF hack (helps a lot) and take the aircan completely off, you can hold in the filter with the little clips. If you've got time cut the catalytic converter off and just leave an open downpipe, it'll be loud but it will help quite a bit. If you don't want to do that just drill a couple holes in the bend on the downpipe. Again it'll be louder than stock but not as loud as cutting the cat out. Have fun and BE SURE TO POST HOW IT GOES!!!

Well, I just got back, and I had a blast! It was a big turn out, and I got to run my car twice. I see how edictive this is. I am totally hooked. I can't wait to get my new engine and go again. Keep in mind, i am a ROOKIE when it comes to this kind of racing. I've never raced like this before. This was truly a humbling experience, and fun at the same time. I still have a lot to learn and perhaps I will be better at this. These times will be building blocks for me. My two pass times are as follows:

1st pass
R/T=.637
330=6.976
1/8=10.646
MPH=67.33
1000=13.848
1/4=16.558
MPH=82.90

R/T=.579
60'=23.95
330=6.897
1/8=10.562
1000=67.48
1/4=16.456
MPH=83.17

What do you think? I felt like the car could do better, but I wasn't sticking very well. It was hard to get grip. When I got up to the line, I had the O/D off, and I had the power button on. I had my foot on the brake and I was giving gas up to 2000 rpms. This is something I need to work on. I left late both times.

I never got to race my buddy, because we think he blew up his engine when he added a 75 shot of nitrous. He thinks he either blew a spark plug, blew a wire, or blew a piston, when he got to the end of his last run, the car died, and it would continue to die when he got over 3000 RPM's

All in all, it ws a fun night.

That's about what's expected with the 13g turbo. What free mods did you do before you went? And next time instead of just turning overdrive off use the manual stick thing on auto's (1,2,D,OD) It might help a little. And if you're having problems getting traction (which you shouldn't be at this point) rotate your tires and let some air out of the fronts next time you go to the track.

Keep in mind, your reaction time is not calculated into your final e/t. You could leave the line 20 seconds after the light turns green, and still run a 16 sec quarter mile.

I've got room for improvement though. I'll go again next month. With a better engine.

sounds like you won! To finish first, first you must finish. : D

Why don't you keep this motor in and experiment with it. I don't think the stock auto fuel system can handle 16psi with the 350cc injectors. It would be a shame to toast your rebuilt one playing around with that.

Even tired DSM engines can make really big power. Honda humiliating power.

Do the free mods, get a boost controller and crank up the boost while watching your fuel. Standard procedure. You may realize you need a bigger turbo to reach your goals. Using that engine to max out the 13g will help you figure out where you want to be power wise. The obvious answer is "more" it always is, but 14b, more? 16g more? Maybe even much bigger than that.

I've already started tearing the engine down this weekend. My next engine will be a a bit better. My 1g will be down until January until I get everything done. The foundation consists of .020 over Wiseco pistons, Brian Crower rods. I am going to do all of the usual things I've picked up here. My goal is to get in the 13's

You don't need to do all that to get into the 13s with these cars. There are people who have run high 13s completely stock except for free mods and a MBC. You just need to swap out that 13g for a 14b, or if you wanna do it once and do it right at least go with a 16G, but yeah, 13s....work smart not hard.:)

I know too many dsms that have gone in the mid-high elevens without touching the internals.
