140mph on e85

After a long summer working the bugs out the car and having just bad luck getting to the track,some hard work payed off. My brother Luke Capitano, tuned and drove the car for me. This was his first time behind the wheel for a full pass with the car and it was spinning 1st-3rd on slicks. So he did pretty damn well. The track was horrible I guess. Here's his breakdown of the night:

"First pass was a 11.58 @ 134 on a 1.99 60ft. The car also was sputtering when I shifted, I was shifting at an indicated 8k and the ECU limiter is set to 8500. About 30 psi, 14* peak timing and I believe low 11's AFR on E85. I didn't get to check the gauges cause the car was skating around pretty bad thru 3rd gear.

2nd pass was 11.53 @ 136, 1.98 60ft. About 32-33 psi, 16*peak timing and should have been mid-high 11's AFR. Again the car felt like it was all over the place. Still sputtering during shifts, after this pass I found that the MSD rev limit had been set to 8k, so I was shifting after I hit the limiter, Dork. Raised the MSD limiter.

3rd pass was the best, 10.81 @ 140.63, 1.83 60ft. 35 psi, 17* peak timing same mid-high 11's AFR. Still shitty traction thru 3rd but the car never sputtered once. This is the new best for the car from it's previous 10.9 @132 last year. The main differences this year from last are JMF SMIM, FP2 cams, speed density conversion, E85, and the fuel cell/pump setup. My goal was for it to hit 140 this year, and it feels good to make it. My brother put alot of work into the car this year and I'm glad to see it pay off. I'd like to thank the local kid Mike for helping me swap tires and exhaust at the track too."

Here is a rundown of the car:
92 GSX 6/4bolt
4-5 year old rebuilt 6 bolt 2g pistons on 1g rods, BS elim
FP2 cams, Mitsu MLS HG, ARP studs, MSD & 300m COP
JMF SMIM, 2.5" pipes, 24X3X12 FMIC
PTE Journal GT35 .63 a/r 5bolt, anti surge S cover, 4" intake to headlight
Tial 38 off #1 runner, Adapter Plate on Evo 3 mani, 3" open DP
5gal cell, 2 inline 255's in parallel, -8 line, Aero Reg, 1600's, E85
Eprom Ecu w/ speed density conversion, 4bar Map, GM IAT
NGK AFX wideband, Pocketlogger/Pocketdyno Palm
Tre Special 2g trans, 4 spider, ACT 2600, poly/solid bushings throughout
Agx shocks, Megan springs, Centerline rims w/ 24.5 x 8.5 M&H slicks
8-point cage with weight reduction.

I'm really happy with e85 compared to the sunoco 110 i've ran forever now. On the 110 I would get 7-10 counts of knock during the run. With the fall blend e85 it was knock free. We have set of Kiggly springs/retainers to go in still. I'd like to get it back out one more time we me at the wheel to lower that et with some traction and more revs.

You know the weight of the car? What was you 1/8 time and mph? You got enough mph to do some low tens once you get your 60's down, congrats on hitting 140mph.

Very nice. From what Ive been seeing people are making anywhere from 5-15% more power on the same setup with e85 over 110 race gas. Also not to mention its knock free and it cleans the motor. Best stuff since sliced bread!!

Congrats man! Im anxious to get my car to the track for the first time this year as well with my 35r. This gives me hope that one day........it will pay off all the work/money.

Race weight with driver is around 2650lbs. The 10.8x pass the 1/8th was a 7.5 at 105mph, so there's alot to be had. Tire pressure was set to 13 psi and it still didn't help much.

All the money I blew on race gas over the years really makes me wish I switched sooner.
It was really a night and day difference when I switched over to e-85. The car overall ran better and picked up power. The next thing I'm going to try is E-98 and hope it performs even better.

The track we race is 131. A bunch of local guys are going up there Saturday so I'm going to make it for some more passes.

Be careful with the E98. It is some what of a different animal from what I've heard. Where you can usually count on about a 30% increase in required fuel on E85, I've been told that it is closer to a 50-60% increase in required fuel with the 98, as it is almost pure alcohol. I may have been misinformed, but that is what I know on the topic. Also, we've been using E85 here in CO for well over 4 years, and have yet to find a better fuel! And its only 2.29 a gallon at this time! Cant beat that!! We've never really looked back sense then, and never seen a need to run the 98 as we still see no knock on most of our cars and most of us dont run a waste gate, or have it plumbed so it will not open. My co worker has even maxed out his 40psi Diesel boost gauge on his GT35R HTA, so we are not even sure how much boost it is actually running, and still no knock!! God bless the makers of this blessed corn juice!

Update:

We made it back up to the track last weekend with some decent results. First pass backed up the previous best pass with a 10.87 at 139.7 with a bogged launch. This at 35psi. We tried to turn up the boost more but it ended up lifting the head and breaking up in gears. We managed to run a 10.7 and another 10.8 still in the high 130's so I'm happy with that.

The car is not hooking as good as a like. The 4-spider with a open front diff is not loading the car evenly and causing too much wheel spin with the slicks. So I have some changes coming with the tranny/drivetrain and building a new motor for it. I don't feel safe anymore with that stock shortblock with the boost I'm running.

It's funy your acr has the characteristics of a fwd looking at your video and mph lol. You gotta get the launches cleaned up with less bogging and more traction and you will have a crazy fast setup my friend.
