I need to know how i launch my AWD Talon TSi! If i just dump the clutch fast the car practically dies ! Do i ease out or what!!! And where should my shift points be AT? THANKS

Rev up to about 4-4.5k don't hold it there but rev it up to get some boost going then slip the clutch while giving it more and more throttle when it starts to engagee then slam the gas and let clutch out all the way.(all of this happends in a matter or seconds). As far as shift points if you have the stock turbo 6k. If you have a bigger turbo then redline is were you want to shift.

since you have a stock clutch, slip it quickly. when i had mine, i revved to 5,500 rpm's & just dropped it, as soon as my head hit the seat, i slammed on the gas. pretty good 60's followed

Yikes.. that seems harsh

I usually hold at 4500, slip the clutch out slowly adding gas, and ride it to like 5G, then 1.6s follow

When I launch, I rev to about 4,500 and then let the clutch slip for a couple seconds and then floor it and let the clutch go. It's been pretty effective for me. Don't rev up and just dump the clutch because your going to kill your center differental. There not that strong, thats why it's good to let the clutch slip until you have a pretty good grip. Once the car is moving it's not so harsh on the differental. I launched at 5500 and when I went to 2nd the clutch slipped like crazy and the car wasn't moving. I over heated the disc and it wouldn't grab for sh*t until I threw it into 3rd. If you have the stock clutch go easy on it because you'll wear it out fairly quickly. A good thing to do is let your clutch cool a little bit in between runs. Since I smoked my clutch the car actually shifters a little smooth, plus the overheating doesn't seem to have damaged the clutch if anything it helped in smoothing out the surface of it. Also when I smoked the clutch I had shifted at 7000 by accident and that didn't help my clutch any.

I've been using the slipping method that many of you have described. I launch about 4500 and slip the clutch for a sec. When i finally let the clutch all the way out i get a little chirp from the tires. does this sound right, or am i slipping too much? i've only been netting consistent 1.9x 60 foot times.

hehe..

i get something more along the lines of hooking up.. for about 5 ft, then all four tires erupt in a RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT then i resume hauling ass.

good to know its normal.

I test drove a 95 Tsi AWD with the 16" stock rims on it before I bought my 98. I could hold the rpm at 4500 and slip the clutch out quickly while pushing the gas at the same rate and lauch great with just a little wheelspin and pulled like hell all the way to 70 when I shut it down, I did this a few times.

Now I just picked up my 98 a couple days ago from NY, I have tried to launch it about 5 times, 3 at 4500 rpm, and twice at 5500rpm. Everytime it bogs out and wont even break the tires loose. One time it took off, then bogged after a second, then pulled just fine. WHY cant I get this thing to launch?

BTW..My 98 I bought has 18" ACE Desire rims -w- 235/40/18 Toyo Proxes, Are these tires too wide for a stock engine? I am ordering a 2.5" test pipe, downpipe, catback exhaust, boost guage, egt guage, Manual Boost Controller, Intake Pipe, and I already have a 1g BOV and K&N FIPK, As soon as I install all of this do you guys think that will give me enough power to get these tires to spin alittle so I can get a decent launch? Or does the bogging have nothing to do with my tires and rims?

I think someone said that's about the widest tire you should put on a dsm. You could be losing power thru the 18's. They are pobably incredibly heavy and when weight moves away from the center of the rim it takes more power to turn. The mods you are planning on doing will let you turn the boost up a couple psi. You might want to get a new fuel pump. As an afterthought I know the 2g BOV isnt great. It may be causing problems. Not sure tho. Youve had ur dsm a couple days and have only launched it twice? I'd have launched it repeatedly until I got bored or ran out of gas. But I also have back roads to hide in...and run from the cops in if I have to.

Could it be possible the 95 didn't have the LSD rear differential and the 98 does? Here is a test, drive the 98 in a tight circle, if the tires bark it has the limited slip rear end.... Much harder to get all the tires to spin, but much better for traction...

i had the same problem for a while in my car, i have 17" factory rims and what i do is rev it up to about 5500 RPM slip it to like 10 mph and let it out fast, but i dont dump it, usually my tires will break loose a little and it will bog only like 500rpm and i will take off with no clutch smell. it works for me, i dunno about those 18's, like InferiorWang said, those rims are probably heavy. And toyo proxes, heh, lot o traction:D

it's a stock clutch which is why i've been shyin away from just dumpin it. alot of ppl tell me to dump at 5 but that would kill the clutch, especially w/ awd. lately i've been slippin it to about 10-15 mph then dumpin it just so i dont kill it. i've been pretty careful w/ the clutch b/c i dont know how much the stock one can handle

i have a act 2100 and i dump it at 5500 to 6000 and pull 1.6, 1.7 60 foots all day, but i am on my 4th trans so...you choose but i never broke from a lanch only in to 3rd and once in 2 just #@%#@%#@%#@%in power shifting too fast i have slowed down the shifting and the trans is runin like a champ

My stock clutch didn't handle many AWD launches. My suggestion, if you have about $500 for a new clutch, burn up the stocker and install an ACT or CFDF.

adam, you're on your 4th tranny? hehe are you replacing the tranny or do you just keep getting it rebuilt.... i thought once you rebuilt the damn things they would take a lot of beating?

It depends if you upgrade the parts when you rebuild it.

well I am on my 3rd tranny. I built this one a little better than before. Seems to be holding up ok and i launch at 6000rpms. I power shift 2nd and 3rd. no problem.

If you do it yourself... $200-1500 depending on what parts you get and where you get the from.
If you have a shop do it... $500-2000 depending on what parts you get and who does it.
