I took my '92 Talon AWD to Tucson for the N.H.R.A. division race this weekend. I have it set up for J/FI (J stock-fuel injected). Tucson is at over 3,000 feet elevation so they have an altitude factor they use to calculate the corrected E.Ts and speeds. I set both ends of the class record at 13.21/105.79 mph.
I finished teardown yesterday evening- they had me remove the cylinder head and they checked all the usual things like piston dish volume, combustion chamber volume, valve sizes, cam lifts, head gasket thickness, deck height, etc., etc. It all checked legal. The car weighed 3,430 pounds with me in it. Minimum weight is 3,410.
I actually ran a 12.25 at 111 mph earlier in the day, but they had us rerun it because they thought there was a problem with the clocks. The car hooked great on that run. Frankly, I don't know how there could have been, but who knows? I then put 36 pounds of air in the tires and granny shifted second gear and it spun enough to slow down to the 13.21. I backed it up with a 13.28. I may post the time slips if I can figure out how to. At any rate, it should appear in the records section of National Dragster in a week or two.
I think I may be the first DSM in the N.H.R.A. record books. Does anyone know? In years past I've set four other stock class records with other brands of cars...
If anyone is interested in my meager mods:
Several hundred pounds of ballast to make weight.
4 BFG drag radial tires.
Exhaust system removed from the oil pan back.
Pacesetter 2G header
Big fuel pump, hotwired
Wastegate actuator disconnected (Kids, don't try this at home)
TMO chip
A/C, P/S, EGR, balance shafts, etc. removed
C-16 VP fuel
K&N filter
Stock turbo, intercooler, hoses, etc.
That's all, folks!
Actually, just about any other mods are illegal and they do a pretty thorough teardown.
