Installing GSC S3 cams

Hi, I have a couple of questions about the installation of camshafts in a 2.0L engine. The camshafts are GSC S3 280/280 and have 11.7 lift, is this dangerous as the pistons can hit the valves? You need to do some work on the pistons? I'm using double springs Manley. I know I must be very careful with the springs installed height, which must be installed height?

As far as the valves hitting the pistons there is other info needed to be factored in.

Has the head been milled? If yes, How much?
Has the block been milled?
What pistons are being used?
Do you have over sized valves installed?
What head gasket and what thickness is being used?

A couple more questions need to be answered. What size valves are being used stock size or 1mm over? What pistons are in the motor? Are the pistons valve releifs machined for larger cams/valves?

Hey. Thanks for your replies, I appreciate your help.

Neither the head nor the block have been milled. Pistons are 8.5:1 JE at 0.50.
Valves are stock, not oversized. Head gasket is Cometic, 0.045 thickness. The pistons are not machined valve releifs, just that's what I know, if required to do that job.

It is very rare to have a head that was not milled at some point in the past 20 odd years.

Measure the head thickness.

Are you sure the Head and block surfaces are correct for a Cometic/MLS head gasket?

Also you need to measure your piston to deck clearance.

You say that the pistons are not machined Valve relifes... so you are using a cast piston, like NPR?
But before that you say you have JE pistons, JE are a forged piston and should have a fully machined piston crown, if that is the case you should have machined valve releifs.

What part number Manley Duel Valve springs are installed? What seat pressure at what installed height?

The GSC3 cams will NOT work with the Manley springs

The cams have a net lift of 11.7mm or
11.7 x .03937 = .4606

The manley springs have a max lift spec of .370 due to the outer spring, the inner would barley handle it.

So you need to decide to change to a diffrent spring set up, or go to less agressive cams.

But if you run the GSC3 cams on the Manley spring kit #26115, you will be breaking parts about on start up.

Yes those are fine.. as far as the cams they are really a race only cam that I would use only in a pure drag car. If this is what you have then throw them in and give it hell!
