The video below is a little something we've started doing to show how well our engines hold up.

This particular engine is a 6 bolt DSM engine that ended up in Chris's 2g AWD DSM. The engine has about 10,000 miles on it, a lot of passes, street and dyno tuning and has run close to record times.

While all this was going on over the last three years it also went through fuel system problems, ignition misfires, the complete loss of the stub shaft in the oil pump and it just kept on ticking.

What pistons are those dave?

I've seen low mile stock n/t's that weren't that nice inside LOL!. This gives me hope I won't be frightened when I pull mine apart for rings and bearings here in a few days.

Thanks for the post David! I was so very pleseantly surprised to see the tear down results, I thought for sure it was a little beat up! Hopefully this real world evidence will help sway those who were on the fence of who to go to for an engine build. Like I said in my email notes, I couldn't be happier with it and would recommend your engines to anyone of any power level or goal, they kick ass! Like was mentioned, there was a learning curve involved in the early miles of the engine with tuning as I was bascially just starting out using dsmlink. I've gotten much better since then, but couldn't avoid the fuel issues I was dealt.

I can't wait to see what's in store for my new chassis this year, hopefully some records will fall!

Damn David.... I was hoping you would break out some of the mic's and indacators and show the crank shaft endplay,Piston to deck clearance anoung a few other things..... :D

Looks good like you said for a Hone and go!

If you have a good 7 bolt that has never crank walked, I'll build it. If you call let the guys know I said I'd do it.

The only pistons/rods we sold "used" were new EVO8-9 pistons rods we took out of new engines.

That is why I love the DSM 6 bolts.
But did it run lean on E85 or normal gasoline? with E85 I proofed (not planed) that it is impossible to kill a 4g63 just with running lean. Car had no power until it did hit boost, I looked at the AFR guage and it went of the scale (Running 18PSI Evo3 Turbo with E85... leaner than 17AFR on AEM UEGO doing 120mph on the Autobahn)

Great video :)

Running a car lean on any fuel, into the ridiculously lean zone, typically will not damage the engine actually. There's not enough fuel left to build enough heat to kill it. Sounds crazy but it's how it works.

Thats true. I believe that it is accentually hard to hit that "sweet" point of damaging with E85. It seems that the lack of energy per kg and its cooling capacity is preventing it from doing any kind of damage.

I don't know for sure but I'm always on the lean side (cruising ~17.3:1 , partial load ~15:1 and full load ~12.8:1 [according to gas calibrated AFR])
No damage whatso ever, so cruising ~100mph with light throttle is still in the 16 range.

Anyway its always a good thing when a 4g63 survives with just a refresh, I guess in a few years it will be hard to get a new one.
